Linus checking in a patch made with an LLM that doesn't work, has a race condition that needs to be fixed, and then writing "I'm going on holiday, can anyone take this over" is peak comedy

specifically, i'm looking at building an alternative installer for netbsd for desktops. it will be using wayland, so it would be beneficial to use wayland to draw the graphics as a test of if it's going to work when you've installed it. it should be small because it's the installer. it doesn't need to do anything particularly fancy, but i'm not too bothered if it pulls in a widget library, so long as it supports wayland.

(not generally, i have a specific project in mind)

i want a small language that has a good wayland library and support for threads and running programs and isn't slopped all over. is that too much to ask?

you too can look this deeply happy, simply go all-in on the inevitable future

i cannot imagine anything more embarrassing than being on this poster

the onboard wifi doesn't appear to work at all. it's an RTL8821CE apparently. and i remember how much fun realtek drivers were back in the day on linux.

i've now installed it again, this time on a piece of cheap aliexpressium.

i was slightly pleasantly surprised that graphics acceleration works out of the box (it's intel integrated from 2019(?)). or at least glxgears does a few hundred fps!

haven't yet tested audio or wifi, but graphics was the major problem i was worried about. clearly one 7 year old intel integrated gpu working without effort is hardly everything ever, but it's also very much not nothing. for a start, it bounds "just how bad can it be?".

well that was a thing.

turns out if you don't setup another user during install, your new install will be locked to single user mode.

also ffs was very upset and wanted fscking. this was not done for me. from the terminal i had access to (which wasn't capable of running vi, mind!), i couldn't even fsck it myself because it was 'in use'. that'll be because it was mounted at /, so rather hard to unmount.

anyway, i would like a filesystem that doesn't want a song and dance about merely existing to boot off before i mount zfs.

oh no, it broke while i wasn't paying attention.

honestly not feeling like much today. maybe i will attempt to get hardware accelerated graphics on netbsd?

join the most real place on the internet

and why on earth would i want to do that?

New: Accenture has told employees it will only fund $29 per month of Claude use. Meaning that employees who often spend as much as $1,000 a month are now scrambling to find ways to keep access to the tool. A sign of the continuing crack down of AI https://www.404media.co/accenture-tells-employees-they-can-now-spend-only-29-on-claude-per-month/

the crate (of course it's written in rust!) page starts with thanks to two AI companies i've never heard of (of course it does!)

here's the "tutorial":

z foo # cd into highest ranked directory matching foo
z foo bar # cd into highest ranked directory matching foo and bar
z foo / # cd into a subdirectory starting with foo

z ~/foo # z also works like a regular cd command
z foo/ # cd into relative path
z .. # cd one level up
z - # cd into previous directory

zi foo # cd with interactive selection (using fzf)

z foo<SPACE><TAB> # show interactive completions (bash 4.4+/fish/zsh only)

highest ranked directory?! directory starting with?!

call me old fashioned but i just select the directory i want by path

a smarter cd command

"i know, i will simply compile the new zig compiler".

spoiler: no, i won't. but not for lack of trying.

so there seems to be a tls implementation that everyone uses in zig. i have questions about whether this is something you can trust.

shall i... audit it?

oh right yeah, i'm at the point where i realise there isn't actually a good language to write a particular thing in yet.
