    well that was a thing.

turns out if you don't setup another user during install, your new install will be locked to single user mode.

also ffs was very upset and wanted fscking. this was not done for me. from the terminal i had access to (which wasn't capable of running vi, mind!), i couldn't even fsck it myself because it was 'in use'. that'll be because it was mounted at /, so rather hard to unmount.

anyway, i would like a filesystem that doesn't want a song and dance about merely existing to boot off before i mount zfs.

i've now installed it again, this time on a piece of cheap aliexpressium.

i was slightly pleasantly surprised that graphics acceleration works out of the box (it's intel integrated from 2019(?)). or at least glxgears does a few hundred fps!

haven't yet tested audio or wifi, but graphics was the major problem i was worried about. clearly one 7 year old intel integrated gpu working without effort is hardly everything ever, but it's also very much not nothing. for a start, it bounds "just how bad can it be?".

the onboard wifi doesn't appear to work at all. it's an RTL8821CE apparently. and i remember how much fun realtek drivers were back in the day on linux.

@dysfun@social.treehouse.systems please add "log" to your mount options to enable filesystem journaling.

also, you can do root-on-zfs but it requires a song and dance to set up the necessary ramdisk. it's the same song and dance as cgdroot, which i happened to set up last night, so i may be able to help if you have issues

@linear interesting, because zfs would solve encryption by itself, which is one less thing to go hurrendously wrong. i personally would prefer this. at the minute i have to use ext4 to boot alpine which then pivots to a zfs root once i've unlocked the disk.

@linear (i'm also looking from the perspective of distro maintainer in the style we discussed - what does it make sense to try and improve? my first inkling is the installer could be so much easier. on a desktop you don't typically want e.g. serial console only or any of the other things that it's cool it can support but are kinda niche interest for deskop)

@linear when i try to use wlanctl -a to list wireless networks , i get an error about sysctlnametomib being an unfound file or directory. i can only find a function named that. is there a script too? what package is it in?

@linear so one thing is i can only see the pci device listed in dmesg, there's no interface device using it afaict. so i did wonder if it was failing to find the device or something
