This is depressing. Perfectly good alternatives to all Adobe have existed for many years and are used at pro level, but someone hallucinates some code with claude (which I hear was trained on code of programs like gimp and inkscape) and suddenly everyone is raving about it being the end of Adobe, though the thing they praise is at best entry level stuff. But like other snake oil sellers, they claim it will get there, though their "in one month" is now "many months" #artcraft #foss

@dilmandila Oh yes, I was also rolling my eyes very strongly when I first heard about this. Didn't consider the training aspect, but of course the open source codes are right there for everyone to steal...

@dilmandila The cheering might be caused for other reasons, at least from observations within my bubble:
    - FOSS project have been re-writen by AI in order to circumvent GPL and similar licenses, so why not free proprietary software the same way?
    - Massive copyright infringements from OpenAI, Meta, Google and so on went without consequences. If e.g Adobe would sue now, the question of AI and copyrights  need to be resolved finally.
    - And finally the Adobe subscription model might just die.

@dilmandila there have been a few sensible and serious reviews of this slop and they all find the same fundamental problems. Turns out it’s easy to churn out somethjng that looks just like the adobe ui but of course it doesn’t actually work.

@dilmandila This is a great argument and honestly, you saved me a click.

@dilmandila Same thoughts here... But most people also claim that they need Microsoft Word because you can't get anything done with LibreOffice. Or that they actually need Photoshop instead of Gimp. Hell, let them vibecode what they feel like. At least it's open source and it might dispell some of the magic of pricey closed software. Personally I always believed that software should be free and with AI there's much less incentive to steal code anyway...

@dilmandila I perceive a gap with techbros whose opinion clearly shifted in the past 6 months. Beforehand they were against the AI written software big wave. Now it's just "whatever if people stop using paid software"
People 👏 the point of FOSS is to be out of capitalism and all of its parts. AI is capitalism. Throw it away! Software won't be free if it's built with AI

@dilmandila totally agree with you and find the raging weird and off putting.

The only way the optimism might make sense to me (being one who feels trapped by Adobe) is that the new software claims to be able to open and save Adobe formats perfectly. The FOSS software can’t do this. Being able to handle Adobe files well is a prerequisite to making a clean break with Adobe.

Otherwise, the hue is completely misdirected.

@dilmandila My youngest daughter is an artist. She uses a Wacom tablet with Krita on her System76 laptop running Pop!_OS. When I told her about this she just shrugged and said "I use Krita." Cheers, -Randy #krita

@dilmandila @Gargron I haven't dug deeply into the matter, but I took it as an ironic way of confronting Adobe with its own contradictions: they have no issue about training their models without compensating the artists whose work is used as training data (and devalued in the process), so if they attack this project, they implicitly attack their own practices too.

@dilmandila i learned about the existence of Glama.ai today and the thing i gravitated most around is the "maintenance" rating:

Maintenance health based on commit activity, issue responsiveness, release frequency, and community profile.

    "A" = actively maintained. "F" = abandoned or archived.

search for anything you want related to something on the internet (suggested searches: google, minecraft, bluesky and finally mastodon). what do you see? a bunch of abandoned shit. this metric isn't just "had an update recently", this is "does anyone who worked on this give a shit?" and the answer is no. no one gives a shit about things they already made and maintaining something a random plagiarism generator made is the absolute worst experience you can have in programming so no one is doing it.

this is from a group of people who have apparently smart agents that can "just do things" for them without needing involvement, like keeping an app up to date. literally the value proposition of this application of LLMs - the boring stuff no one wants to do.

even if they did do that extremely well, why would you waste tokens on something you're done with? why do anything to a fragile codebase that does everything you need?

and finally, look at the duplication ("google" search is good for this). assuming earnest effort, it's "just" massive duplication and solo development that can't be collaborated on. assuming malicious intent, some of those projects must be credential stealers.

and the slop machine operators are proud of all of this.

@dilmandila I find it ironic, that the company who introduced AI features in their program, experience..just for a second...the same thread artist did.

@mansr Perhaps due to copyright issues. Apparently you can copy a likeness or features or something like that but not the actual code.

@mansr I think they were trying to appeal to artists who don't like prompts. Their selling point is something like "use AI with total control over the process" or something like that. They say you can run claude inside these apps so perhaps the prompts is optional to those who want it, but those who don't can still work them without prompts, though claude does things in the background. Not really sure if I got all that right but from the few YT reviews I saw that seemed to be the case.

@dilmandila There's not a good FOSS alternative to InDesign either. There's Affinity, which is 'free', but owned by Canva, so not really. And no Linux version. Sure, there's LaTex and its cousins, but good luck getting the designers to work with that. I don't even really want to work with that. Back in the day, I used FrameMaker for everything, but Adobe has ruined that too.

I know right? I've been using Inkscape for ages. Adobe basically doesn't exist as far as I'm concerned.

@dilmandila One bright side is that Adobe might be forced to actually lower their prices now that all their customers think that free versions are a dime a dozen.

@dilmandila At some point it's going to tread on one of Adobe's patents then it's over I think. There's absolutely no way Adobe will turn a blind eye to someone literally trying to duplicate their products.

@pixelcode gimp + krita encouraged me to ditch photoshop. Nowadays there is a Affinity and Davinci Resolve 21, these are not foss but still free with pro-level features abd functions.
