For more than a decade, farmers have been fighting for the right to fix the machines they own. Now, the FTC settlement with John Deere marks a massive win! Deere must give farmers and independent repair shops access to the same repair software, manuals, and repair capabilities it provides to authorized dealers.

This is what Right to Repair looks like when it moves from principle to enforcement. The work is not over, but this is a big step. Learn more at the link below.

A person kneels in front of a partially disassembled John Deere riding lawn mower inside a barn while making a repair with an iFixit precision screwdriver. A smartphone displaying repair instructions is propped up beside the engine, with tools, a bit set, and parts tray spread out on the floor nearby.
A child and an adult kneel together in a barn while repairing a John Deere riding lawn mower. The mower's hood has been removed to expose the engine, and the two smile as they pass a shop rag between them. A parts tray, tool roll, and repair tools are spread across the floor.

@iFixit it's very weird to hear good news coming out of America. Did John Deere get behind on their bribe payments or something?

    Yes.
Indeed that is an important step, in the right direction.

Needless to say, this must apply to all manufacturers.
And every device and machine must be repairable, within reasonable, but very broad limits.

We call them John Dear because they are fscking expensive to buy and maintain.

That crappy company will continue to ask a horror price for the repair manual and Propriety parts.

@iFixit I think what we need is a general law that says that purchasing something grants an automatic right to maintain and repair it which the manufacturer/dealer has no right to interfere with, and in any lawsuit over the issue where the defendant shows their actions were maintenance/repair the plaintiff is liable for 100% of defendant's costs and fees in the matter. Also for the defendant's time dealing with the lawsuit, at a rate equal to the highest-paid attorney for plaintiffs.
