When you thought you were emotionally done with something and then you get an unexpected punch to the stomach (metaphorically).

That'll sure make for a tricky day that feels like wading through treacle.

Do other countries have treacle? Do they just not call it treacle? It's a term of endearment as well. Particularly in the north.

    "Hello, treacle"

But I don't recall ever hearing about it outside of my northern roots and baking a sticky toffee pudding.

@miffyhelen the only actual treacle I know of is British lol. It's similar to molasses here in the States.

@miffyhelen so, long ago, in the days of predictive text on mobile phones, a friend of mine played up the Cheeky Cockney Geezer thing and called his girlfriend “treacle”, but was most amused when his phone always changed it in messages to “useable”.

His girlfriend was, rightly, not so amused 😂

@miffyhelen I have recently been to a rum distillery tour, where they talked aboout this. Molasses is the unadulterated byproduct of extracting sugar from sugar cane, treacle is a mixture if molasses and a sugar syrup, to make it a bit sweeter and lighter. Then there's golden syrup, which was traditionally made by further refining molasses.

@NZBarry I wanted to make a joke about molasses being the back end of moles but this was actually really interesting and informative, so thank you 😁

@miffyhelen now then, question for you. Treacle to me is *only* black treacle. The other stuff is golden syrup despite treacle tart and sponge both being made with it. For hubby they are treacle and black treacle.
    What are they for you?

@Affienia definitely the black stuff. Specifically from a red Lyle's tin where the lid isn't on properly but has been glued shut by the treacle that gooped everywhere last time I tried to get some out. That's the real treacle experience.

@miffyhelen Treacle toffee and Parkin made with (black) treacle are reminders of my origins near Manchester. Both are unavailable here (Beds/Cambs border). Anyone know of a supply? Online or locally?

@pthane I tried to find parkin in Southampton a few years ago because, as a Yorkshire lass, I just assumed it was everywhere. Nope. The only way was to make my own! That and buying online from Lottie Shaw's.
