    Questions

    bsky.app/profile/did:plc:3dq7p

    1. Is there a way to just temporarily disable PHP on my server? I tried removing php from apache mods-enabled but Wordpress still is able to serve pages somehow. Not sure if that's the caching system or how it's working.

    2. What is the simplest thing I can put into an Apache conf directive, like a <Directory> or <VirtualHost>, to make the site fail to load with a clear, temporary message like a 503?

I've always known that WordPress would destroy me one day.

@mcc Do you have something like php-fpm running? All the WP installs I look after do, so disabling PHP would involve shutting php-fpm down.

@mcc It's an alternative to mod_php that the people who built the WP installs I inherited liked to use. Faster and better under load, apparently; works with nginx as well. I have no idea what it does other than 'provide PHP to a web server'.

@conniptions Okay. I am using mod_php. However to my alarm disabling mod_php does not seem to disable php, and I don't know what to make of that.

@mcc That is definitely alarming and makes me wonder if you, in fact, are perhaps not using mod_php after all, if php persists after disabling and hupping. Apparently there are several php-fpm alternatives called helpful things like Swoole and Roadrunner (I had no idea about them until two minutes ago) - perhaps you are running one of them?

@conniptions I feel incredibly certain I could not wind up running something named "php-fpm", "swoole" or "roadrunner" without even knowing it.

@mcc That does seem fair. I am mildly concerned about this PHP runs without mod_php enabled business though.

@conniptions also, once i finally figured out how to shut the server down, i realized i had a very large and complicated set of rewrite rules set up for my cache server, and it's possible this was simulating PHP working even though PHP was not working. but that's something i'll figure out later. when my server is up again
