I sincerely don't know what I'm going to do when Windows 10 extended support ends. I can't bear the thought of having a malicious trickster spirit be the basis of running my PC

(Note to the people about to reply to me with "switch to Linux": First off, I'm typing this from my Linux machine, second off, fuck you.)
@mcc switch to netbsd :blobcatdevil:
@cyberquixote @dysfun *rubbing eyes* do you have literally any objections to FUTO other than vibes
@mcc @cyberquixote @dysfun Being associated with weird people https://drewdevault.com/weird-guys/ (Eron Wolf, Louis Rossmann, and subsequently associated with Curtis Yarvin)
@fogti @cyberquixote @dysfun i find this a deeply unhelpful analysis in a world where i'm trying to avoid projects based on "operator advocated ethnic cleansing in present-day europe"
@mcc @cyberquixote @dysfun It is true that this is only a "guilt by association" (a well-known right-wing person who is afaik also somewhat related to the e/acc cult) via conference participation and likely monetary involvement…
but besides DHH and afaik also Elon Musk, not many problematic people actively advocate for straight up ethnic cleansing. not everything is that clean-cut.
@mcc @cyberquixote @dysfun here's a blog post someone wrote up about FUTO
@gizmomathboy @cyberquixote @dysfun does not insofar as i can tell answer my question as stated
@mcc Yeah, I agree. As much as I hate using Windows, and I refuse to downgrade to 11 from 10 (sic), I do still own some software that only works on it.
I would love it if someone open sourced the Windows XP kernel and the community could build relative feature parity with the closed source BS version, but that's a pipe dream.
Or, maybe Microslop can go bust and it somehow leaks?
@evdelen it sure would be nice if individuals had as many rights to steal and resell microsoft's source code as microsoft has rights to steal and resell ours
this
@mcc i use W11 for work & i hate it but it is useable. the forcing-everything-to-OneDrive requires constant circumvention - i have to navigate constantly for saving/etc., & it changes by application on how one must navigate to the place one wants to save.
it is extremely user-hostile. but i'm getting paid to waste my time by corpo systems requiring their computer, so that's fine. idc. i bitch about it & never touch Windows outside of work anymore.
Switch to clay tablets?
@mcc doesn't windows 10 also do this?
@kirakira I don't know. I'm not sure how it would, since theoretically Windows 10 does not have me logged in to a microsoft account.
@mcc ahh right you could still choose that back then lmao. i believe it does if you are logged into one, anyway
@kirakira Ah. See, that's why I never logged in. I forsaw this
@mcc If you need Windows, I can guide you through making 11 work and stay out of your way.
@jernej__s Microsoft is constantly updating the operating system. How and why could I possibly assume that any set of changes I make to microsoft-proof Windows 11 will not be undone by a system update? (Or that my microsoft-proofing won't somehow result in a system update misapplying and deleting things?)
@mcc I only install the "no ms account" on my clients' PCs. Also, i uninstall it before installing something else.
@mcc Leaving the subjugation of Microsoft is no option ?
@Loria pls read rest of thread. thanks
@mcc I only use Windows for work but even then, I'm keeping a precious, precious Windows 11 ISO image that dates back to when you could "easily" install with a local account.
Pretty sure if you don't give it your MS account it won't enable OneDrive right? Right?
@mcc I am currently using Windows 11 Pro and I am planning a move to FreeBSD. I can run Windows 11 Pro in a FreeBSD virtual machine for games and stuff.
@mcc A similar thing to the linked post happened to me on MacOS when I was going through the settings to remove iCloud backups from every single freaking application individually 😩 Luckily I had only just started using it and didn't have *too* much saved - just some D&D campaign notes that I was able to re-create, but the fact that they even include an option to delete things on-disk when removing cloud sync behavior is very anti-user
@mcc Its a good question. I have been toying with using a VM on a machine to boot Win10. Not great GPU support so games are less good, but it does let me reset the state to 'known good state' by copying over the disk image. It isn't a fun place though.
@mcc You may find massgrave (dot) dev to be helpful.
@mcc
Use Linux. Use MacOS.
It's Windows 11. 11!
At this point is not the fault of Microsoft. 11 times, they showed what they are going to do 11 times ...
@mcc y'know...i wonder how hard it would be to continue support just from the community. Maybe hard? Like you'd need cryptographic certificates from Microsoft hard?
@mcc I'd evaluate what you actually use Windows for. If you need software that only runs under Windows (can't be easily set up in Wine) then you're stuck with Win11.
One option is to set up Win11 to use a local account. That's easiest done during a clean install, after you've tied yourself to an MS account it absolutely does not want to let go until you deploy the heavy artillery. Then don't log in to OneDrive and it can't play silly-buggers with you.
@tknarr At one point I was hoping Wine would have sufficiently developed by 2029 but I now I am trying to get off of Linux due to "AI code assistant" use
@mcc I'm waiting, hoping LLMs go the way of blockchain. The financial data seems to point to a collapse coming.
@tknarr a scenario i'm legitimately worried about is LLM market crash, only the very biggest companies can afford LLMs now, the linux kernel is now the only slopcoded project on earth because IBM provides it free tokens
