@dieweltist yeah yeah, I'm sure that's exactly what people talk about.

For all practical purposes using an LLM to "write code" is just renting a program. It's just SaaS.

@hp But then the obvious solution would be creating a coding LLM which can run locally which is good enough? Which is obviously not the solution to the problem. I feel like your post isn't addressing the issues with LLMs.

@dieweltist if it were possible to train an LLM entirely locally or in such a way that the contents of the LLM are entirely inspectable and editable. And it was practically possible to run on a machine that people could reasonably have at home then I'll consider it not a problem from a free software ethics point of view.

If the only PRACTICAL way for people to access the capability is by renting access to proprietary software on someone else's computer then it is not empowerment

@atax1a @dieweltist I'm only addressing the point that free software people, like myself, are being hypocritical about LLMs.

Telling everyone who wants to write software to a) pay monthly to access proprietary software
    b) download and install non-free software locally to work with the SaaS software

Is pretty much exactly the opposite of what we ever wanted computing to be.
