I doubt anyone has missed it, but just in case this for some reason is the message you see: PHP has some critical security problems. You should probably act now!

Want to play with atoms?!

We just released the August release of MSEP.one, the #molecular engineering platform!

Made in #godot and, if I may say so myself, pretty neat!

Get it while it is hot!

EMPOWERMENT ISN'T BILLED MONTHLY GEEZ

On Matthew Garrett's post: "LLMs: (enable that)
Free software people: Oh no not like that"

No, people RENTING their empowerment to use computers in freedom is, in fact, exactly the "not like that" we have been talking about forever.

Paying apple $99/year to put your own software on your own phone is also "not like that"

Paying a company to let you use their computer how they want you is exactly what we didn't want.

The majesty of 4dwm.

#sgi #irix #retrocomputing

Now we're getting to the good part of #irix

After the just unacceptably and inexplicably bad install process.

#unix #sgi #retrocomputing

Not to brag, but if anthropic had paid me $20,000 and given me a month I'd also have been able to write them a very shitty C compiler.

For everyone worried that #unix and in particular #hpux might be hard to use, I made a short #tutorial video below on how to install software.

In this video you see how easy it is to install some games!

The idea would be you could get an MCI number, and use these old clients (or write your own!) or access the same mailbox via IMAP.

You'd get an address like 111-2222@mcimail.net with a possible alias.

Anyone in need of an email address they could use from DOS?

How about a (probably paid for obvious reasons) version of the old "send an email via the post or fax" options? I think I can't resurrect Telex I'm afraid. 😀

Dear #retrocomputing nerds, I'm pretty close to done with my reimplementation of the MEP2 mail protocol. This allows such fine email clients as "The Wire", "Mailroom for MCI", "Lotus express", and last but not least "Emma" from functioning again (with a suitable modem emulator)

I've written this thing as part of my #fosdem talk on MCI (come see me on Sunday!)

I was thinking tho, would there be some interest in me running a real node, with SMTP interop? Would people want to use it?

Daaaaaaytoooooonaaaaaaaa

Dunking on people and companies is more popular than saying anything positive, but, #mozilla with #firefox created the web as we have it today.

Without them, without Gecko, we might be trying to run Internet Explorer 6.1 service pack 15.

Y'all don't remember how broken the web was with ie6 as the only viable browser. ActiveX, VBscript. Transparent PNGs were <object>s!

Nothing worked outside of ie6.

Give them the benefit of the doubt. They want an open and usable web.

I don't know what I was expecting...

#retrocomputing #solaris #win98

Wow! #sun #solaris is super duper easy to use! I don't understand why not everyone is using #unix !

#sunpci #retrocomputing

I just bought a domain to replicate the old support sites for old computers. So old #sun workstations, #ibm PowerPC stuff, #SGI things. (Actual domain TBA)

The thinking is to get together all of the patches, firmware updates, operating system install media, etc. for these old systems. So that not everyone has to go spelunking through archive.org and forgotten FTP mirrors.

What kind of information would you want to see? Would you be willing to contribute information!

#retrocomputing

Wow, after installing #solaris 2.5.1 on my #sun ultra 10, I can really see why people loved these old #Unix workstations.

It's so easy to develop some software on this!

#retrocomputing #visualbasic

Should I submit a talk to #fosdem2026 about reverse engineering the Microsoft Bob SDK and writing applications for it?

It feels nerdy enough, but is it FOSS-ey enough... 🤔

#retrocomputing

In 1995 #IBM officially does not endorse the #internet in the #os2warp box.

This letter was included in the "bonus pack".

I like how "Adult" is capitalized.

#retrocomputing

Finally I can ditch my tired old Sparc station, and switch to #Windows like everyone else!

Introducing SSH2WIN a port of SSH2DOS to #16bit Windows. No win32s here!

This was both harder and easier than I thought it would be.

Official release coming soon, once I clean up some details.

#retrocomputing

FOUR, I tired FOUR IDE DVD drives today. One of them won't read anything, one will only read pressed DVDs and burned and pressed CDs, one will only read pressed DVDs and nothing else, one reads pressed CDs and nothing else.

These things are fiiiickle.
