You want to hear a hot take?

So someone does informed consent, and gets on transgender hormones.

Or even goes through the (majorly-complicated) process to acquire and get through a trans surgery.

    And regrets it.

    Realizes they're not trans.

Has to face "undoing" it, or the feeling of having "ruined themselves."

    SO FUCKING WHAT?

We do stuff. We live and learn. We get scarred. Things go wrong. We experiment and draw conclusions, and get to know ourselves better.

    Everybody dies dented.

    So what?

Yeah, "Informed Consent" should stress the "informed" as much as the consent. Mine did. Ten years and no regrets. Transgender procedures have one of the lowest regret rates in all of medicine.

If doctors have a problem with possibly getting sued, they should take their frustrations out on the legal system, and push for statutes of limitations.

NOT limitations on trans people's agency. Yes, minors included.

We all have the RIGHT to fuck around and find out.

@valentine yep. After all, right wingers are always going on about "health and safety gone mad". So somebody fucked about on a motorbike and lost a foot, that's their god-given freedom, isn't it?

Yet when it's "I fucked round with hormones and gave myself boobs I didn't actually want", it's different somehow?

Fuck, they don't give a shit if it's some bodybuilder who took too many steroids and ended up with breast growth from estrogen, do they?

Almost like they're operating from transphobic double standards.

@valentine I have permanent and deep scars from donating plasma for 4 years straight. Nobody bats an eye. In fact they usually say something like "you're a hero!" Ignoring the fact that I was doing it to pay for my phone so job offers could call me back for an interview. I kinda regret that I look like I had a needle problem at one point just so I could afford a phone bill :/

But I pay for laser hair removal out of pocket when I had a decent paying job? "Ooooh! But what if you regret it?!". Well, since I was a kid the friggin pink power ranger was my favorite, I stole ladies clothes in high school so I could dress in secret, spent the ages of 21 to 25 openly and publicly cross dressing, and I've been on HRT for 11 years...I don't think this is just a sudden and rash decision 🤔 maybe let me decide my own life? I won't begrudge anyone their own life decisions

    @valentine
I've often thought that what I eat every day probably has just as much (if not more) effect on my body as HRT has.
    (Mildly tongue in cheek.)

(Sidenote: I love "Everybody dies dented." It's so very true.)

@valentine Do we need to bring up the stats about knee replacement surgery regrets again? Because I can look them up. It's shockingly high.
