    Look what I did today! An external round surface and an internal curve. There is even a flat surface carved out, if you can get your head around that.

    I made two schoolboy errors. In my enthusiasm, I gouged a little too deeply and knocked off a tiny bit of internal corner. I still can't believe I did that in a day.

    An oblong block of pale Ancaster limestone sits on a sandbags on a banker table in a warehouse. Next to it is a flat stone chisel and a mallet with a nylon head. The block has been shaped in two ways: first, a long edge was rounded to 50mm radius; second a curving shape has been carved out of the opposite edge. This second shape had as its template a paint tin. Then it was chiseled out straight into the block, the 2 curving faces meeting in the block at a right angle. I hope that makes sense to you, it took me some mental gymnastics to understand.
