    RE: ohai.social/@dcoderlt/11701478

    So...Google says they are "rolling back this feature in Google Earth while we work on implementing stronger guardrails," but I'm still going to say what I initially felt on reading this:

    It's getting hard to believe that it's accidental that all these disinformation tools are being widely distributed to the general public. It feels like we are being handed a bunch of tools for ripping our social bonds to shreds & losing our own sense of reality.

    Of course, I bet that if someone makes the suggestion of putting an AI feature in one of Google's existing products, that suggestion probably gets fast-tracked with 0 pause to reflect, as they are desperate to "sell" AI to us as if it's something we need & want.

    But they are inventing things that make creating disinformation convenient, & while it's possible no one at Google specifically thought this one through, they are adding AI to everything knowing that disinfo is a primary use.

    Whether or not anyone thought about the implications in the case of Google Earth, Google does know what they are doing when they add an AI generation feature to something.

    They know AI is most useful for deceiving people, but they keep putting it in everything anyway. That much IS intentional, even if they go "whoops. Creating this specific disinformation tool seems to have crossed a line" (by which they mean that THEY don't want to receive the blame for the harm people could do with it).

    AI has so many socially destructive features. This is known. The people providing access to their tools know its potential for harm.

    They know that if you talk to a chatbot as if it was a friend or therapist, you could see significant mental health decline or even kill yourself or someone else.

    They know that AI image generation tools are undermining people's sense of reality in multiple different ways.

    It's pretty hard to believe that they DON'T intend to hurt people.

    >They know that if you talk to a chatbot as if it was a friend or therapist, you could see significant mental health decline or even kill yourself or someone else.

    Even the people who "believe" in AI & talk to chatbots themselves (such as Sam Altman) know that it can be incredibly harmful, but they are the sort of people to assume that anyone harmed by the thing must be "weak" & therefore harming them isn't a bad thing. They aren't unaware: they don't think the people affected count as people.

    That's a thing to take note of: a lot of the AI-pushers have a worldview that says if something bad happens to you—but ESPECIALLY something like psychosis—it's because you're weak, & they don't really believe that people they perceive as "weak" have any value.

    In the eyes of someone with this perspective, it isn't morally wrong to hurt someone with something if (in their mind) it wouldn't hurt them if they were "stronger".

    So you confront someone like Sam Altman with the damage that the tools he's selling can do & he's thinking "I don't know why you're talking to me about this. It's their own fault for getting hurt."

    @artemis
    Darth Putin keeps saying “We don’t do propaganda so you will believe something. We do it so you will believe nothing. Then you will do nothing.”
    Turns out, given a chance to do that cheaply, all other governments do the same.

    @artemis It's hard work keeping 95% of the planets population from realizing they are being oppressed and factory farmed. Anything that further atomizes social bonds or organization is worth a try for the oligarchs.
