    @blogdiva As much as I hate AI, and think AI is a piss-poor education tool, on thinking about it I don't think this is a fair test. I don't think anyone that is an AI proponent for education would say the learning method is "have the AI write an essay for you". Honestly, I'm not sure most teachers will say that "writing an essay" is much of a learning tool, so much as an evaluation tool.

    I would much rather have an experiment between "experienced human tutors" and "AI tutoring 'partner'". That experiment should also include an accuracy of recall portion; let's see how much bad info the AI is "teaching".

    Ah! Here we go, a couple paragraphs before the excerpt:

    AI tutors are available (sorry, grad students), as are AI-generated quizzes, study guides, flashcards, and AI-generated visual explanations.

    Test that shit. If we test "essay writing", OpenAI just gets to say, "Of course that's not going to help learning. Instead, students should be using our blah blah blah." Test their actual education offerings against the meatspace counterpart, and show that AI's garbage.

    This completely parallels a new story I saw of a AP English class teacher who had her class completely analog. Her students liked it because they could concentrate better and talked with each other

    they preferred being unhooked from the Internet

    The societal effects will be cumulative as students move through each grade... without actually learning fundamentals which are later needed for higher level courses.

    Any school system which promotes this -- will be graduating humans -- a generation -- which will struggle throughout their life.

    Critical thinking skills will not be learned, making them easy targets for more propaganda.
