The current CEO of Identity Digital (formerly Donuts Inc) named Akram Atallah, used to be the president of ICANN's global domain division, the folx that “own” and “run” the internet.

Under his leadership, ICANN introduced the new generic Top Level Domain program, or new gTLD, giving the creation of a new domain ending (.shop, .brand, .gmbh) a price tag of 200k USD.

Interestingly enough, the one business that jumped on this newly and artificially created market of top level domains, was Donuts Inc., whom Akram Atallah then became CEO of. Today, they control ~37.1% of all new top level domains, as they created hundreds of shell companies to bypass limitations.

I have a list of all shell companies, public records proving they all tie back to him and Donuts Inc., and he's proudly bragging about having done this on LinkedIn so it's not really a conspiracy but known corruption.

Also, I put “own” and “run” into quotation marks because I just know y'all nerds would skin me alive if I explain things in a simple manner

Okay, I guess you really enjoy the story about ICANN and internet corruption. I am now in contact with a few newspapers to get my (now 5 year old) research published. Considering lots of this stuff has been removed from the net and many records lost, I realize my hard drive is among the few places that has this evidence.

Between February and August 2018 all of these transferred their TLD to “Binky Moon LLC”, except for two, which transferred it to “Dog Beach LLC”. A lot of the new ones were then registered by “Dog Beach LLC”.

I'm not accusing anyone of any wrongdoing, but how many innocent people do you know with 307 shell companies?

When a friend of mine saw how many top level domains belonged to one and the same company while he worked on “The Internet Portal”, we began researching and found this one blog post titled “Donuts, Inc: a creepy company” which claims to have last been edited in 2018, but actually tracked Donuts Inc's doings through the Web Archive up until 2021, as can be seen in the linked Google Sheets document.

It's really odd how a billion dollar company has such little media coverage or knowledge about it online.

@ErikUden : how does he profit from it ?

And why call it corruption? Who is corrupting what?

(but, yes, that’s straight conflict of interest scam)

@ploum he created a market and his company was the only one with the best ties and knowledge on how that market worked. Up until a few years ago, the process of even being eligible to register such a TLD was very intransparent.

    I'd call it insider knowledge.

@carstenfranke @ploum exactly. There's no need for a “.google” or ".amazon” TLD beyond these corporations needing to buy them in order to prevent someone else from doing so. 200k for a business like Amazon is nothing.

Being able to have “.scot” or “.cat” (Scotland and Catalonia) which are obvious regions but wouldn't get their own TLD as they aren't listed as a country by the ISO standard, is good, but there should've been a better way.

The domain ending “.exposed” is another crime like this. It's astronomically expensive to register a .exposed domain and all big businesses do so in order to not have a site meant for exposing them.

The fact that ".zip” or “.mov” was allowed as a gTLD is the newest of this scharade.

@ErikUden @ploum it would be great if there was a browser / email function to simply block everything from those TLDs.

Very frustrating to see all these guys in power using their positions for personal scams and profit.

@Canageek windows still run `.COM`... no, wait, is there still a `COMMAND.COM` file in windows?!?@>?>! These come from DOS time, which they took from CP/M, and I don't think, I mean, I hope no compiler still produces those?

@ErikUden @carstenfranke @ploum I talk to companies almost every month about protecting the hundreds of domains they’ve got registered to avoid phishing and fraud. This need is brought on by the very existence of these worthless gTLDs. It is entirely there to profit off people who must protect themselves from the resultant threat. Just like protection money paid to gangsters!

@suzannealdrich hey, odd question: May I ask you to contact me via Signal (link in my Mastodon profile) so we can discuss this further? I'd like to write an article in a German newspaper about this and would like you as a source, as it's otherwise pretty hard to visualize the damage of this industry, or at least a perspective on new gTLDs.

@ErikUden the commercialisation of the domain registries is a scandal of which the @internetsociety should be thoroughly ashamed. It should have been an international public utility from the start.

@ErikUden "Meine Entschuldigung an Apo Red ICANN" Video series dropping soon?

Edit: the Apo Red was formatted as strike through, I guess Mastodon doesn't support that
