    No powered winches - twelve crew work together to hoist the yard with the sail already unfurled.

    Almost no blocks or pulleys, so grab a handful of sheep tallow to lubricate the tar covered lines.

    The Draken is also an experiment in figuring out how to sail a Viking square rigged longship. New crew needs to learn the old ways.

    When we reached Norway we moored for a day at Avaldsnes Viking farm.

    @th Amazing! What I really want to know is what does a ship like this sound like? I've never been on a wooden vessel that large.

    @scott @th I haven't been on that one, but on a similar sized wooden schooner and a larger brig with a steel hull.
    What you can expect is mostly the sound of wind in the rigging, with the occasional creak of a wooden block, but he wrote they have only few of those in the Draken.
    I'd also expect a bit of sloshing of bilge water down below.
    The rest depends on the weather. Small waves lapping against the hull, or large waves pounding against the bow that send shivers through the whole ship. With stormy weather and large waves you'll usually also get some creaking in the hull or between the hull and deck.
    In calm weather my experience is that sail ships of that size appear much less noisy than a yacht.

    @scott mostly wind sounds and creaking, although the audio team recorded lots of real boat noises to ensure that they had proper foley effects.

    @scott @th It’s hard to get anything but wind noise if you don’t have a boom mic, but here is a crew on the halyard winch. It’s much more interesting when they’re hoisting, because then they’re moving fast and it’s like a ballet, but here they’re just carefully putting in a minor adjustment. But you do get some wood creak.

    Awesome pictures!
    But met me get this straight...
    This is a film about an ancient Greek myth, filmed on a huge number of locations, many of which are not even close to the Mediterranean, with boat scenes shot on a Viking ship from Norway, starring an American actor of English/Scottish/Finnish/Swedish ancestry, co starred by English and American actors.
    But Elmo Mush is upset that an actress who appears for less than five minutes on the screen has the wrong skin tone?

    @th the antennas on the mast are cool. Fusion of ancient past, modernity. Also that crane seems really useful.

    @seepr I've also taken down masts the old fashioned way through the cross trees without a crane and it is definitely easier with modern equipment
