Fwiw the funniest scene in Independence Day is when the Euros are all like "oh thank God the Americans have a plan, we've just been out here eating Marmite sandwiches and gawking in awe at the aliens." You can definitely tell *we* made that movie.

There's a scene in that movie that shows the location of every alien mothership. Every single G7 nation and the three largest other nations (China, India, Russia) each have exactly 1 mothership above them. Except for two countries. The USA has three (NYC, DC, LA) and Canada... which has none.
In my head canon, the aliens were there to punish the other nations for ignoring Canada.
