Why, dear god why must it always be pulling teeth to configure PHPStorm to use tools inside a container?

It's 2026. There is no excuse for how complicated this nonsense is.

Don't point me at the "autodiscovery and self-configure" page. It's wrong and worthless. I've tried many times.

I love IntelliJ/PHPStorm when it works, but... damn I don't want to think about how much time I've lost to this across many projects.

@Crell Only one I'm struggling with atm, is Mago, but this is a permissions thing with the IDE in windows and everything else running in containers within Debian in WSL.

Anything in particular you're fighting with right now? or is it a host of tools?

@ianh For some reason I can't get the PHPUnit/Xdebug integration to recognize that there's an autoload file, even though it clearly is there. That's after I had to completely remove all "interpreters" and start from scratch because one value wouldn't auto-detect.

But Mago, PHPStan, php-cs-fixer, and all the others simply won't execute inside a container, only on localhost. So turning on those plugins just gives me an infinite list of errors every few seconds.

@ianh And I've never gotten web requests into a docker container to work properly, ever. Only PHPUnit tests.

@Crell Web requests as in xdebug breakpoints? If so, have you configured the IDE config in your docker (compose) setup? eg:

    environment:
    XDEBUG_CONFIG: "client_host=host.docker.internal"
    PHP_IDE_CONFIG: "serverName=webhooks"

And in PHPStorm, I configure the same in the 'servers' setup. The 'serverName' MUST match the name configured in PhpStorm's server 'name' field.

Again.. hoping I'm not preaching to the choir here, but this setup works for me. The path mapping MUST also match.

@Crell Don't know if this helps Larry, although I had this in WSL, it's still *nix based, so maybe relevant?

With the likes of phpstan etc, I always have to configure it specifically, using "default interpreter" doesn't work for me, but selecting the configured interpreter works (I have the same issue with the other quality tools.. cs-fixer, etc).

Don't know if you've tried this.. apologies if you have.
