I got a call from someone I don't know.

"Hi. We have a FreeBSD server. It's been working perfectly for years, but it hasn't been updated since then. We asked AI to update it, but now it won't boot anymore. It didn't even make a backup before starting. The AI keeps trying things, everything is down, and we've already spent over €500 in tokens. Can you help us?"

"Sure. €500, plus the time it'll take me to try to fix it. Assuming it can still be fixed and nothing important has been deleted."

"That much?"

Some silence.

"Well, I hope AI takes your job away!" And he hung up.

Believing that autopilot automatically makes you an invulnerable professional pilot will ruin far more people than job losses will.

I don't know if AI will take my job away, but it's already cost them €500 and, probably, their server.

@afilina Are you aware that the TLS cert has expired on phpc.tv?

Damn.. updated PhpStorm and boom! First thing you're presented with is some AI shit.

And PhpStorm light version has some "fake speedup" shit to start with. It takes a screenshot of the app when you close it down and then presents that at next load to try and fool people into thinking that it's loaded really quickly. I don't have the "load last project" enabled on startup, so it shows this screenshot and then hides it.. what a pointless gimmick that is.. gimmicks seem to be a JB trend right now

Bathurst weekend! 😎 So many great races over the years... for me, 2 that standout were 2014 and last year in the rain. 1000km over 6 hours.. and races being won by a few seconds 😃

The Gonertia Go package (https://github.com/romsar/gonertia) is really nice. The stuff I'm used to for the FE with many Laravel projects, but with the speed and simplicity of Go for the backend.... so far, enjoying this combination! 🤓

Came across a sweet gradient generator for quick n dirty images:

https://gradientshub.com

Handy for a variety of things 😃

Finally got around to pushing a project I started ages ago... local dev-focused incoming webhook server to test your outgoing webhooks.

https://codeberg.org/digiservnet/webhooks

Few straggling bits to tidy up now.. but it's working with a pre-built docker image available: https://hub.docker.com/repository/docker/digiserv/webhooks/general

Uses webhooks (obviously!) and websockets for instant dashboard updates and a console command to generate HMAC signatures for testing via a client like @yaakapp

Second ever OSS project.. code all hand-written 🤓

Finally got around to installing 'unbound' DNS forwarder. One of my pi-holes is out of date (base OS) so decided to install both the unbound instances on separate servers... took about 10 mins from start to finish for each instance.

Only tweak I had to make from the default was to add an 'access-control' line, eg:

access-control: 10.0.0.0/16 allow

Without this, remote connections from the pi-hole would fail. After that.. 💥 sorted.

Home assistant 13 years old!

🎂 Happy birthday to us!

Home Assistant is officially a teenager. 13 years old today 🥳🏠

Here’s to the teenage years! 🎉

Thought I'd try to understand TWMs. Will definitely take time to get used to, even the basics.

I've used FancyZones on Windows for as long as I can remember, where defining the set of zones to place windows into works well. Automagic tiling concept seems a bit weird. A substantial time investment I feel is going to be needed for this.

On the flipside I like that the default mindset is keyboard for everything, so there are benefits for sure.

Experimenting with GlazeWM (https://glazewm.com)

Wow PHPStorm got so bad that at work, renaming any variable simply deletes every other occurrence without showing the rename popup. Good job with all that goddamn slop. I don't even have the mental energy to file a bug report.

I really hope that JetBrains bankrupts when the bubble bursts or even before. People need to connect actions to consequences at some point. We need plenty of examples so others might learn.

Also discovered Fan Control ( https://getfancontrol.com ) while trying to get the rad fans to play ball and not sound like a Typhoon jet!

Loads of configuration for various controls/mappings and open-source (windows only however).

Not much of a hardware guy really, but it does give a sense of satisfaction building out a new case with decent cable management.

Just replaced my youngest's Lian-Li (can't remember the model) with a Phanteks NV5 v2 case and D-RGB kit.

Second NV5 case I've built now (middle lad also has one) and really like them. Lots of space, plenty of room for fans and great cable management. The built-in GPU support bar is a nice touch too.

Marathon Nextcloud upgrade evening:

Migrated an old v24 instance running on bare metal to a home server.

Moved from bare metal to a docker compose setup (needed to do this mostly for PHP versions) sitting behind an nginx reverse proxy

Gone from nextcloud 24 to 34

Replaced OnlyOffice with Collabora (started with Collabora years ago)

Upgraded PHP from 7.4 to 8.5

Glad the instance is finally up to date. Now the upgrades are done, I can migrate the entire setup over to Hetzner 😃

Is there any way of filtering out certain "channels" on phpc.tv? Is this something possible with an account?

I love the concept and view videos there.. unfortunately for me, there's certain people who IMO, like the sound of their own voice too much.. so would be good to filter the wheat from the chaff.

#Forgejo 16.0.4 and 15.0.8 were just released! They are critical security releases.

We recommend that all installations are upgraded to the latest version as soon as possible.

Check out the release notes and download it at https://forgejo.org/releases/. If you experience any issues with this release, please report to https://codeberg.org/forgejo/forgejo/issues.

Some serious machinery turned up.....

😎

My youngest loves bikes... my eldest rides a 2014 Yamaha MT-09.. he asked a few mates from the WotBoyz bike club if they'd come and escort his lil bro home from school...... not a bad way to get home 😃

I'd never met the fellas before.. but they were seriously some of the nicest people I've met and were so happy to have surprised and made my youngest a happy kid!

Damn.. although my Keychron K8 Pro keyboard is lovely and solid to use.. I hate reverting to a non-split keyboard from time to time as I grab for my mouse far too often. With the Kineses Adv360.. my hands are permanently on the keyboards and the mouse sits inbetween them.. so it's a "conscious effort" to grab for the mouse, but now my mouse is where my right keyboard normally is and my hand "naturally" levitates towards it.. argh!

First-world problems granted.. but a "problem" nonetheless.
