I have to say that the proportion of media interviews and zoom meetings I do in my pajamas has gone up dramatically since I've arrived in New Zealand. Time zones are hard! #ProfSamLectureTour

AFAIK the only reason for this nonsense is avoid all the regulations and social unrest land based datacenters are getting more and more lately.

So I assume the real reason they want to create cities on the Moon and Mars is to avoid the regulations and social unrest they are getting about some island they used to frequent not so long ago.

    Totally!
    Extraterritorial.
Wasn’t there a bunch of techbros who tried to invent ‘seasteading’ so as to live on cruise ships outside territorial waters/jurisdictions? Those dumbasses just weren’t thinking big enough!

@sundogplanets on the bright side, the engineering hurdles should be enough to prevent this from being put in practice for a reasonable time, shouldn't they?

@pgcd @sundogplanets ...but on the flip side, lots of the testing steps on the path toward 1million satellites are putting us at risk of Kessler syndrome?

Obviously they won't work, but are they going to send a bunch of trash up there before the money guys notice is the question.

@sundogplanets welcome to The Far Side. It's so easy for people near +11hours to chat with astro types living nearer Greenwich.

Zoom calls with Californians? They don't even know what "other country" let alone "+11h" means.

So, when I think "datacenter", I think a structure significantly larger than, say, the ISS.

When I think of "datacenter", I think of something with significantly greater energy-needs than the ISS.

When I think of "datacenter", I think of something with significantly greater cooling-needs than the ISS.

But, I see "over a million satellites" and I have to think that what the term "datacenter" conveys to me is
significantly smaller. Like, say, the size of a 4-slice toaster. Even something so small as that, if there's a million of them, I don't know how the stars remain visible to the naked eye, let alone to a terrestrial telescope?

@sundogplanets I am surprised it "is real". In my head, this completely impractical asinine idea was merely a scam to get AI investors' money.

@sundogplanets Musk wants to IPO Space-X, it’s all noise to hype up the price, just like hyperloop and his stupid robots.

    @Nonya_Bidniss

We only *thought* we were worried bout "orbital congestion" and "telescope blindness"...

This will certainly seal both those deals.

These FUCKING supposed "engineers" can't see they're obstructing their own plans for their desired off-planet access/colonization...???

    Money now!!!
    Reality later!!! (If at all...)

    FUCKING idiots all.

@sundogplanets Will submit from NZ. I wonder whether WTO or someone could question to UN/ challenge why FCC is sole regulator of this.

@sundogplanets Things are getting out of control. So much for human (and AI) intelligence! We seem intent on self-destruction.
