2016: “Mexico City has held its first Day of the Dead parade, complete with floats, giant marionettes and hundreds of dancers and performers. Mexican tourism officials say the inspiration came from the opening scenes in last year's James Bond film, Spectre, which was shot in the city.”
I don’t blame them at all for lifting that idea, that opening sequence was the best thing about SPECTRE
“In religious studies and sociology, the pizza effect is the phenomenon of elements of a nation's or people's culture being transformed or at least more fully embraced elsewhere, then re-exported to their culture of origin, or the way in which a community's self-understanding is influenced by (or imposed by, or imported from) foreign sources.”
Completely unrelated, but a Film Nerd Nitpick: that opening sequence from SPECTRE sure looks like a single long take, which would have been an insanely impressive feat to pull off, which is why it bummed me out to discover that they kind of faked it
https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-news/how-spectres-opening-scene-pulled-836200/
Kinda put me off the whole movie, tbh. But then I'm a messy bitch who lives for drama
Looking back, I should probably also ding that sequence for doing the standard Hollywood thing of having everything in Mexico be viewed through a grimy yellow filter
@jalefkowit who better, honestly?
@jalefkowit Darnit, Jason. Now I want pizza. 🤦🏻♀️🙄
@jalefkowit
The last paragraph of that, with the reflective back and forth interpretations of music styles between the US and UK is astonishing. It could be argued, the echo continued into post punk with bands like Talking Heads and Devo.
@ideogram @jalefkowit This also reminds me of the Jamaica->Japan->Jamaica of the Casiotone MT-40 backing rhythm, laying the groundwork for digitally produced reggae.
@ahltorp
I had forgotten about that!
@jalefkowit
@ahltorp @ideogram @jalefkowit Jamaica -> UK -> Jamaica with the jungle scene too
@gsuberland
Fair point.
@ahltorp @jalefkowit
@jalefkowit
Had the best Hawaiian pizza ever, in Belgium.
@DenOfEarth @jalefkowit Had the worst Hawaiian pizza ever in Honolulu. (Cheddar?!!?)
@msbellows @jalefkowit
Gah!
@DenOfEarth @jalefkowit We left a note on the box when we checked out telling the maids not to eat the rest of it, it was so bad.
@msbellows @jalefkowit
Was it a note like this?
Hand drawn (not by me), not AI
@DenOfEarth @jalefkowit Exactly. We also wrote "there is no honor to be found here."
@jalefkowit birdman is also faked so I guess that’s why it’s the birdman effect
@alex I suppose "the Birdman Effect" is more polite than "the fake long take"
@jalefkowit I can't think of James Bond and not think of the Roger Moore film where he flies a tiny plane out of a false horse trailer and lands it at a gas station.
@computerchronicles Roger Moore at least had the kind of cheerful camp you need to put over that sort of goofy bullshit. Daniel Craig's more po-faced Bond made that a harder sell
@jalefkowit Only one of the Craig films I saw was "Casino Royale." Enjoyed it okay, but I'm not the target audience for 2000s "dark and gritty" action films. I'm definitely in the Roger Moore camp. 😛
@computerchronicles You didn't miss much. To paraphrase Roger Ebert, CASINO ROYALE got the Craig era off to a rousing start, from which it never recovered
@jalefkowit @computerchronicles Shush. Craig is the second-best Bond – after Lazenby.
I will fight you over this.
@computerchronicles @jalefkowit
Ah yes, the BD-5J…
My old next door neighbor was a former sales rep for Bede and had a disassembled BD-5 (propeller model) in the garage.
@jalefkowit Once Upon a Time in Robert Rodriguez Land
@jalefkowit Italy gets this treatment, too. lol
@jalefkowit your comment immediately made me think of 1917, and I looked it up, both directed by Mendes
@McSquank My main memory of 1917 is that it was the last movie I saw in a theater before COVID hit the U.S. and everything shut down. But it was already running wild in other places, and I vividly remember thinking "should I really be here in a room full of people right now"
@jalefkowit @McSquank Just think: for more than zero people, the last movie in theaters before COVID was Cats
@jalefkowit @bstacey @McSquank this…is a distinct possibility.
I was really glad that the last movie I would ever see in theaters didn't turn out to be Sonic the Hedgehog after all
@jalefkowit Okay, "self-orientalization" is my new favorite troubling term.
@jalefkowit I had pizza in Venice once. It came with unpitted olives on it. I think they missed something on the re-import.
@jalefkowit Grim Fandango erasure
@jalefkowit TIL. That's awesome.
@jalefkowit That doesn't seem quite correct. They've been going on in SF a lot longer than that: https://www.calle24sf.org/event-details/comite-del-rescate-cultural-presenta-45th-annual-dia-de-los-muertos-procession
@williampietri He’s talking about the parade in Mexico City, photos of which have been popping all over social media today. I made this explicit in the very next post in the thread
@jalefkowit i simply refuse to believe this
@exchgr I bought receipts, scroll down
@jalefkowit unfortunately i already read the article when i posted this. i’m just in denial
@jalefkowit It’s a really great scene. lol
@jalefkowit that is fucking HILARIOUS 😂
@jalefkowit Cool, though now I’m wondering why the filmmakers choose to make up a cultural event rather than using one of the zillions of already existing cultural events.
Because racism+misunderstanding of Mexican traditions.
@jalefkowit
TIL
@jalefkowit Wikipedia disagrees. The tradition of Dia de los Muertos predates James Bond by some distance: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Day_of_the_Dead
@JanWillemvDormolen @jalefkowit The topic is the Mexico City parade, not the extended build-up-to and celebration of Día de los Muertos which I remember from first hand experience in the 1970s.
@jalefkowit to be fair there were plenty of parades/processions and parks filled with altars etc. outside of Mexico city, and even inside I've been informed. This *one* parade was started because of the movie.
@jalefkowit I, for one, can't believe that they copied the parade and not the parkour though the demolition of 100-year-old buildings.
Quite the missed opportunity!
