Oct 31, 2026, 12:41 PMRemember to leave your RAM as unused as possible, bonus points if you tell Sam Altmann that it is sitting there doing nothing.

@Longplay_Games oh yeah, I think MS is running a botnet in their applications these days 🤣

@ncrav My job's most recent AI-driven attack was coming from inside Azure....

@Longplay_Games soon they'll be trying to sell their AI protection racket to protect from their AI.
- Longplay GamesLongplay_Games@mastodon.gamedev.placeOct 31, 2026, 1:52 PM
@ncrav That sounds like an MS tactic for sure
Oct 31, 2026, 12:49 PM@ncrav yeah, I have 10GB of DDR4 (2400 and 2667) unused, and at least 4GB more (of varied types and speeds) in unused computers.
I'm also all for making Sam Altman give up his internal organs, he's not needing them all, and it'd be for the greater good that his, when in acceptable condition, were to be used in people needing transplants.

@jt_rebelo the only thing he can't donate is the brain, since it all void up there. I have a bunch of old dimms besides the ram on the computer, maybe I'll start taking photos for a new OnlyDimms account on OF and offer him a subscription, VIP access to ECC modules included.
Mycotropicmycotropic@beige.partyOct 31, 2026, 2:29 PMI wish there were a board that could use any combination of any RAM. I don't care if it wouldn't be optimized, I just want to use all of those old sticks constantly!
- Oct 31, 2026, 2:39 PM
@mycotropic Indeed! I have a drawer with tons of different generations of laptop ram, that I wonder if archeologists in the future will come up with a religious explanation for it 🤭
RLBear ʕ´•ᴥ•`ʔaltlazybear@mas.toOct 31, 2026, 2:37 PM@ncrav I have 4 gigs of DDR2 667 MHz SO-DIMM RAM sitting around for like 8 years now. Does he want it ?? :))))
I also have 6 gigs of DDR3 RAM, if he wants it !
- Oct 31, 2026, 2:41 PM
@altlazybear I bet he'll be fuming if he finds out! 🤭🤭
Chris BohnDocBohn@techhub.socialOct 31, 2026, 2:51 PM@ncrav @altlazybear Wait till he finds out my son threw away a terabyte of DDR2 a couple of weeks ago.
(My son works with the university's supercomputer center. Thanks to the athletic department, the supercomputer center (and half of my colleagues in the School of Computing, and their labs) had to move to another building. Which is a prime opportunity to dispose of items that've been sitting untouched on a shelf for a couple of decades.)

The Darbscentdarby3@zirk.usOct 31, 2026, 4:29 PM@ncrav what’s the best use of the least percentage of my available ram, asking for a friend
- Oct 31, 2026, 7:51 PM
@darby3 running a simple command line watch of the free ram while drinking your favourite drink 🤭
NSKEnske@ravenation.clubOct 31, 2026, 4:32 PM@ncrav My 96 gig of RAM is *switched off* and doing nothing right now because I'm in the pub enjoying my 'leisure time'.
Oct 31, 2026, 4:55 PM@ncrav I have 2x 4GB DDR4 SODIMM in a drawer which I bought as a fallback for a box which only has a single SODIMM slot. It would cost 23GBP for a Mini-ITX board and 1.50GBP for a CPU to make use of it barring finding a case and 12V DC PSU. It was aftermarket second hand DDR4 anyway which cost less than that. I'll just keep it...
- Oct 31, 2026, 7:54 PM
@bms well if things get though you can always ask Sam for money in exchange for it 🤭
- Oct 31, 2026, 8:32 PM
@ncrav I would rather choke on my own vomit or crawl over broken glass on my belly with my fly unzipped than ask Sam Altman for anything
- Oct 31, 2026, 9:34 PM
@bms 🤭🤭🤭 true
diana 🏳️⚧️🦋🌱dianea@lgbtqia.spaceOct 31, 2026, 4:55 PMyesterday, after I installed OpenBSD, my computer was only using 150MB out of 32GB. I am typing this from a glorious machine of efficiency and security that Sam Altmann would want criminalized.
- Oct 31, 2026, 7:53 PM
@dianea that's so nice! I haven't ran OpenBSD in more than a decade but I remember that my very old pentium would still run it well past its prime.

gotta add at least a little bit to the spookiness then :D

the ones I've shown are Xeon E5-2660s, but the servers were gifted to a student organization I am part of for free, so I won't complain (and we were originally gifted way more than those three servers, but we ended up giving lots of them away, because these three are already more than enough for our needs)

FoolishOwlfoolishowl@social.coopOct 31, 2026, 5:14 PM@ncrav This reminds me how for a long time Windows would speculatively pre-load data in RAM. This was supposedly to speed things up, and people would defend it with the idea that unused RAM was wasted. But in practice it meant that no matter how much RAM your system had, it was never free and your system was always swapping memory out to disk, which is many orders of magnitude slower.
- Oct 31, 2026, 7:57 PM
@foolishowl yeah they forgot that the apps also use memory 🤭
Emma Liv 🇨🇦 🧡not3ottersinacoat@mastodon.socialOct 31, 2026, 6:57 PM@ncrav I bought a fancy gaming PC, but I mostly play 2D indies and retro. I just want to have the room to spare for more demanding games when I do play them. But most of the time, it's total overkill. Suck it, Sam.
- Oct 31, 2026, 7:59 PM
@not3ottersinacoat I kind of did the same 🤭 never once have used more than 60% of the ram, but well when I eventually need it, it will be there.
- Emma Liv 🇨🇦 🧡not3ottersinacoat@mastodon.socialOct 31, 2026, 8:01 PM
@ncrav Always buy more computer than you think you need, if you can!
otter_linnusotter_linnus@det.socialNov 1, 2026, 9:14 AM@ncrav Can do you one better. I have ram just laying around.
(From old computers that is. I'm not a snob.)
