@ascentale @geonz @bikenite A3: I don't think this is what you want, but there are tons of bluetooth speakers out there you can stream music from your phone to and many are small enough to clip on to yourself, a bag or your bike. There are also bluetooth boomboxes if you wanted to go 80s style which appeals to me actually :) #BikeNite

@ascentale @geonz @bikenite #BikeNite A3: Toying with something boombox style for our local Critical Mass, too, mostly because I miss some music style as well as specific political songs from the other music bikes. I especially miss the song "Warum hört der Fahrradweg einfach hier auf?" ("Why does the bicycle path simply ends here?")

@genex: Bluetooth speakers with music coming from my smartphone is also what I have in mind for that. And I don't think it's that far away.

@ascentale @geonz @bikenite A3: these days "bluetooth speaker" seems to be the search term for a battery powered speaker and obviusly instead of fragile cords and easily dislodged plugs you use bluetooth from your phone of music player.

I'm sure they make speakers sized to a bidon cage, or strap one to your handlebars.

CDs on the bike are a PITA and if you can avoid them you should. Bike rides are very bumpy, CD players do not like bumps, it's just a bad combo.

    A3:
I have a small Bluetooth speaker that fits nicely into the bottle cage on my bike.
Apart from connecting to the phone to play whatever audio it's fed (e.g. mp3 files).

The speaker also has a slot for a micro SD card, but song navigation is only a simple "next" or "previous". I suspect that *might* be more comfortable on other models.

@ascentale @geonz @bikenite these days you can get Bluetooth speaker boomboxes, which are often showerproof (if not fully waterproof). For smaller rides (a dozen or so folk) we tend to use one of those, and stream from a phone.

Edit: if I was buying one now, Auracast is a handy feature to look for—new Bluetooth option to hook it up to broadcast audio (phones won't have it much yet, but would allow multiple wireless speakers as newer phones start to add it)

For bigger rides, our LBS bought a couple of Bose S1 Pro powered speakers. They do Bluetooth too, so again it's generally streamed from a phone.

They get strapped to a couple of cargo bikes, & I rigged up a wireless Rode mic, which we mount on selfie sticks (getting them above head height is key to get good range) to connect the two speakers together to have one at each end of the group

You can see one at the start of youtube.com/watch?v=PiOgaeWMf1Y (camera is on t'other)

    @amcewen

As a techie at the local #CommunityRadio, I'd try to run a streaming server on my bike and have the other riders stream the audio using their favourite streaming app, or even a browser. Don't know how that would work in practice, tho.

A few years ago Radio Waterloo's Friday afternoon DJ played cycling music for the #CriticalMass ride that passed right by the studio. One rider had a custom trike with a radio and massive speakers.

@ascentale @geonz @bikenite A3. I am also from the age of the boombox and if you were using a boombox on the bike, it would be for a cassette or the radio rather than a CD. CD players get too messed up by the bumpiness you'd encounter and I don't think that tech has changed enough in the meantime to change that answer.

And I can see someone already has an answer on what you'd use instead now, so I'll bow out. #BikeNite

#BikeNite A3. MP3 player or an old iPod to a rechargeable speaker would work (well strapped ot the handles). I had at one point a rechargeable speaker designed for mounting on handlebars, but not sure they make that specific model anymore.. But I suspect some exist. I would not use them on a regular basis (annoying to listen to someone else's music!) But... event ride, sure! I suspect you could mount some really beefy speakers on a cargo rack, that said.

@ascentale @geonz @bikenite A3: If you're hell-bent on not using your phone (which is a super plausible use case) it does look like there are cheap wireless speakers with built-in SD card slots. So you could stick MP3s on the SD card and have the speaker play them directly, no phone required.

@ascentale @bikenite Sigh, I think I"m like the dynamo person.... I keep just not knowing where tab a and cable B go or how much room / files I can stick on the phone and how to get them there but the only way to do it is to ... do it.
(I also wish I had the right stuff to digitize those cassettes from WHFS FM and the assorted Mary Chapin Carpenter Before She GOt Big radio stuff)

@geonz @ascentale @bikenite when mp3s first came out, you could estimate that 1 Megabyte of data was roughly one minute of audio. Your phone likely has Gigabytes available so several thousands of minutes of music ...

Music wise, if you have access to a cdrom drive on a computer can be "ripped" and converted to mp3. Otherwise find a way to buy and download it. A month of spotify might be the easiest and cheapest way to just download what you need and not worry much about converting or space

A3: We use a JBL flip to play music from my phone when we are out on the bike with my son. The flip fits in a bottle cage so easy to carry on the bike. On the latest version the battery is also easily replaceable.

Some party poopers say it's antisocial but we still make less noise than a range rover:)

@jfparis @ascentale @geonz Side comment about public music:
Yesterday morning I was walking a few blocks to the bus station. It was cold, gray, and foggy. The downtown streets were all cars with drivers racing to the next stoplight. Behind me was someone with a boombox using it for purpose. It wasn’t my music but it was a nice to have another person and good energy tunes with me along the way.

@ascentale @geonz @bikenite A3. I’m with everyone else on answers to this - I use a Bluetooth speaker and play music from my phone. I have seen some cool set ups on trailers (see photo) and there are some instructions online on how to build that kind of thing, but not so much for casual use. #BikeNite

Trailer attached to a bike. The trailer is basically a giant speaker set up for playing music.

@kimu @ascentale @geonz @bikenite oh yeah I was thinking of making something like that for a "bike rave" event we have here although I'd been thinking more like a 6x9" car speaker each side of the rear wheel in chipboard "saddlebags" sized for the rack. It'd probably sound a bit phasey but that can't be helped.

#BikeNite A3 Boom box strapped to a bike rack seems like a great way to go. Stick with what you know.

Maybe look to see if you can get some rechargable D batteries if you are doing this a lot.

If you plan to blast it while riding on a common use trail, I'd hate you for hearing it, but seeing a boom box on a bicycle would make me grin and take some of the animosity out of it.

@realSiegfried A3 #BikeNite I have towed a tuba player on a trailer, and also carried around a (small) bluetooth speaker, and the bluetooth speaker is much lighter and I don't need to worry about it falling off on a hard turn. The tuba player was sitting in a chair that was very strapped down to the trailer; I saw someone else try this (different instrument) without lashing the chair down, and the musician took a truly skilled body-and-instrument-preserving tumble.
