@statsguy Economic slowdown you say? I guess you saw the story yesterday about their plan to remove some of the guardrails from the banks that were put in place after 2008.

Burnham's bullshit-o-meter gets bigger every day.

@MiaMarkTwo Oh god, I didn't see that, but it doesn't surprise me. I was prepared to give Burnham the benefit of the doubt at first, but he's really done a great job of removing any doubt about whose side he's on.

@MiaMarkTwo Oh FFS. Maybe their plan is to have another economic crash that's so bad that they can try to claim that climate collapse isn't the number 1 threat.

@statsguy They’ve millions for this but nothing for new homes, welfare, health and social care, NHS, etc. This is why I am going onto an organic future endeavoring to negate all AI influence in my tech use.

@statsguy "...unlock the opportunities of AI in every postcode..."

wtf does that mean? flock cameras and bit barns next to my house??

What if I don't actually want AI in my "postcode"?

    stupid sentence.

@statsguy "emissions from AI compute over the 10 years from 2025 to 2035 could range from 34 to 123 MtCO₂ (Figure 7). This is around 0.9-3.4% of the UK’s projected total emissions over the 10 year period"

For comparison, beef cattle, which is negative benefit from a caloric pov, amounts to roughly 2% of UK emissions.

This is really a non-issue, considering by 2030, 95% of Great Britain’s power generation will be from green sources.

@statsguy Meanwhile they kick off a "Be Prepared" campaign amidst "the growing threats of climate change".

And meanwhile they approve north sea gas drilling 🤦

Conservatives (which includes neoliberals and nominal "centrists") have decided that it's better for their corporate bosses if society collapses and we institute fascism in the ensuing chaos.

Literally all there is to it, they believe throwing away every single precious and good thing on this earth is worth it if they can squeeze another penny out of the ruined waste.

Best Plan for AI is to ban the LLM/Gernerative/Agentic variety.
Stop destroying climate and environment with it.
It's crazy & undemocratic, a capture by Corporate interests, that objections to planning of any Datacentre in GB are worthless as special "National Interest" rules apply.

But for government, climate change isn't a major problem before the next election and that's their main focus.

For the rich and powerful, climate change isn't going to be a problem for much longer, perhaps not until the 22nd century.

Although, I can't help thinking that Musk, Bezos and their ilk are interested in getting off the Earth because they do understand climate change will eventually catch up with their descendants.

Ben Elton's novel "Stark" is perceptive on this issue.

@gwentlarry What puzzles me is that climate change is going to be a problem for billionaires as well. Maybe they just assume that their wealth will protect them from everything.

Maybe it protects them from any consequences for what's in the Epstein files, but it won't protect them when society collapses and money has no meaning any more.

@statsguy I see from the press release that thinking is to be outsourced to a bunch of code - "£15 million for an AI Challenge Prize to reward innovative AI that fixes people’s common problems".

I can't see this ending well.

Don't understand what UK gov thought in recent years. they've done lots of weird nonsense.
AI can be developed in good manner, like forcing renewable energy for data centre (and bring their own power), water recycling system etc. Germany, Ireland and even China have mandated energy part into their law, but UK, hmm... interesting

On the one hand they say

"We cannot afford to rely entirely on technology built overseas."

On the other hand they say

"the AI Biosecurity Lab (AIBL) [...] will be supported by up to £200 million in AI model credits from OpenAI and Anthropic, plus partnerships with Google DeepMind"

#NewLabour at least pretended to believe in something called 'joined-up government'. A catchy phrase to please voters, though I'm not convinced it was anything more than that. #NewerLabour has ditched it entirely. They now operate in deep silos, the Moloch for Growth crowd sending missiles to annihilate the woke Net Zero hippies, while any increase in green energy will fuel data centres instead of homes.

@statsguy Submissive authoritarianism? They just jizz their pants when they see somebody powerful enough to boss them around forever.
