been battling the arduinos all night.
i cannot get either of my ATmega328P-PU or ATmega1284P-PU loose chips to 'wake up'
i am, however, able to flash bootloaders successfully backwards and forwards between my arduino pro micro and arduino mega prefabricated boards.
so the problem is not with the programming side.
big news.
i found a spare loose ATmega16-16PU.
i was able to successfully flash a bootloader to THAT.
so BOTH the '1284 and '328 are dead.
i went and spent AUD$30 on another ATmega1284PU, in the hopes that this new one will not be dead.

the instructions on this website are correct.
the project was able to flash an ATmega16-16PU this way.
the stock that we have on hand of ATmega328s and ATmega1284s are defective.
samples have been ordered from microchip directly.

I didn’t expect there to be so many defective ATmega chips out there...🤔
This brings to mind the concept of permacomputing - if things go sideways, the chips that will actually be available are the ones currently in abundant supply and costing $1.50 (like this ESP32-P4), rather than the ones that were all the rage just yesterday, but now arrive from the factory with a 4-out-of-5 failure rate and a $30 price tag.😉
what error does avrdude give you?
@RueNahcMohr @permacomputer fails to detect the device signature. Comes up as all zeroes.
can you program anything with it? sounds like an interface problem.
Tie MISO high and see if its all ones :]

The pro micro will also successfully flash another arduino mega.

no, high voltage is only needed if you turn the reset into an IO pin.
