Please boost, if you feel you can

I think we will soon have a diagnosis of PANDAS for one of my children. I have always loved reading about rare conditions. And now, earth-shatteringly, we have one. But I doubt if it's really that rare at all.

If you have a moment, please take it to read up on the condition. It might be your own child, or nephew, or friend's grandchild you're reminded of. Early intervention has made full recovery at least a possibility for us.

@Iwillyeah I had 2 students at the primary school who had it and the sudden OCD behaviors were so difficult. I have some knowledge of one who is now in college and doing well. Best wishes all around!

@mtechman my little one started antibiotic about a week after symptoms began. After two rounds we saw an almost total decrease in symptoms.

I went from applying for more responsibility at work on the Thursday to withdrawing application on the Monday, to taking leave from work on the Friday and wondering if I would ever be able to go back. The change in my child was so quick and so extreme.

We have a loooooong way to go yet, but I feel so lucky that we've had the improvement we did.

@mtechman I'm really interested by your comment. Did those kids get a diagnosis of pans/pandas or was it just that ye noticed the sudden ocd? Was it here in Ireland? How long ago? I'm asking to see how long people have really been getting diagnosis for I suppose. We don't know of anyone here in Ireland willing to diagnose, so we have had to make contact with a specialist in the UK.

@Iwillyeah This was about 15 years ago. Medical opinions have shifted (let me know if you want two fairly recent reports I saw - both U.S. based) it seems...from on board with strep as cause to more dubious but ..."let's treat symptoms". Both kids were students I only saw in the library once a week, but they were young (6ish?) and children I enjoyed talking to, so I noticed the OCD changes. Then their parents told me about PANDAS, which had been in the news a fair amount at the time.

@mtechman I wouldn't say no to reading your suggestions at all, if you can find them easily. Thanks!

@Iwillyeah Jesus, sounds like a bit of a shock to ye all! This is the first I've ever heard of either syndrome, I'll send that site on to a couple of parents I know. Best of luck xx
