Oct 10, 2026, 5:08 PM@Faintdreams That's like crawling around inside your head. It's quite an intimate thing looking someone's books I think. It's a very different experience from the shelf-porn thing where people take photographs of their books. It's much more "these are the choices of my intellectual life"
@Printdevil if it makes you feel better that's only about a third of my real world physical library.
Most of it is wishlist :)
And I did offer. I trust you to roam around my digital shelves. 😉
Oct 10, 2026, 6:44 PM@Faintdreams I wont fold any of the page corners...
Oct 10, 2026, 7:22 PM@Printdevil @Faintdreams For the self-hosters among us, I found https://github.com/dgahagan/shelf?utm_source=chatgpt.com -- looks like a project I’d like to try
@Kobiac @Printdevil Thanks that looks like a good solution for anyone willing to self host *and* learn Docker.
I'm not that kind of Geek 🤣 (well I mean I ~kinda am~ but not in this instance ~) I just regularly download my Librarything info.
It's easier for me.
Oct 12, 2026, 10:29 AMI've hit the exciting wall with library thing of "most of my books don't have a bar code or ISBN" and typing them in is quite boring.
What's even more annoying is neither of my children wants to do this as "Fun Activity"
@Printdevil @Kobiac yeah unfortunately the initial scan of any collection - comes with the hindsight of 'I should have done this when collection was smaller', however when you're collection is small you already know what's in it !
It's a catch 22
@Faintdreams @Printdevil @Kobiac See also board games, where the increasing restrictions on BGG's API have left me cobbling together my own thing.
Increasingly as I get older, despite my hatred of all things Capitalisim I do think that the answer to a lot of my problems is A Personal Assistant and / or Valet and / or Butler 🤣
It's the single 'Rich People trick' that I'd love to emulate !
@Faintdreams @Printdevil @Kobiac I am a Technical Advisor to a lot of friends. They run the New Shiny past me and I tell them why it's bed. It's a bit dispiriting but at least I can help keep them out of the snares.
Oct 12, 2026, 11:41 AMI am the concierge to my children I fear, but I have no advice on how to get one, and I'm taken.
Libraything allows export as
https://www.librarything.com/export.php?export_type=xls
- Excel
- Tab-Delimited Text
- JSON and
- MARC
I've got just enough brain to deal with at least one of those :)
