Imagine a chatbot that after a while said: «Well, that’s enough. Stop asking me. Ask a fellow human being, a professor, a friend, or write a post asking for help on the Fediverse. Read a book. Read articles or documentation. Think for yourself. Experiment. Try something out, then try again. Goodbye.»

I think it was a case of "when limits are explicit, creative freedom can really take flight". It was like participating in a moody drama, and the familiar setting made the few supernatural elements hit especially hard, and created an eerie mood. I was reminded of the Bergman movie "Fanny and Alexander".

I know I have been critical to "realizing the designer's vision"-type-of-games, but this was simply a very fun and engaging evening with friends. Will link to the game when it's released.

What I found most controversial before start was that the game was already sequenced into "chapters" (a broader concept of "scenes"). Quite open, but with prompts like: "First meeting. Focal character survives" and even "Focal character dies". But where the scene is set, and how it's played out, is totally up to the players in the moment.

It worked, it really did. It was like being handed prompts in an improvised theatre session, with a shared context and clear boundaries.

The other three players play friends and relations of the vampire, and the game follows the first few days after the transition. Mood is inspired by the novel "Carmilla" and the movie "Let the right one in".

System is based on rotating GM, pre-written characters (short and sweet descriptions), and "prompt cards", where any player can add to the scene by playing cards like "hidden knowledge revealed", "play harder", "success!", and so on.

It's not released yet. Working title is "One foot in the grave". The premise is modern-day Oslo, one of the players play a character that is just now waking up as a vampire for the first time. There is no "vampire society", no "super strength", no "turning into a bat". Just the horror of discovering that you now hunger for fresh blood. 2/5

On Sunday I playtested a one-shot vampire horror story game. Not an adventure; a _game_. The designer's goal was to create something that felt totally different to Vampire the Masquerade, _and_ a gaming experience that would feel complete in one sitting (3-4 hours). It was fun. 1/5

A nice little haul of Jerusalem artichokes, from less than 1 square meter’s growing area! Only about 0,7 m in fact. If any of you have experience with how to make these mild tubers taste good, I’m all ears! #gardening

I think it’s very cool we’re able to grow our own hot peppers in a small greenhouse in a small garden outside Oslo. Hanging my cayenne up to dry now, and have used one of them today to give our lentil soup a little kick. We also have another chili breed, which apparently is a hybrid created in this garden, between cayenne and Chinese 5-colour chilis. Our only problem is that we don’t eat very much hot food... 😅Planning to give some away for x-mas. #gardening #silentsunday

It costs nothing to read.
It costs nothing to listen.
It costs nothing to borrow.
It costs nothing to ask.
It’s actually fun to go there.

For my own rpg rules that I tinkered with, I considered calling any ability/luck test a «reality check». Still not sure whether that’s really clever or the equivalent of tripping and falling while walking on perfectly level ground.

Anyone have a good recommendation for a cross platform home-library indexing catalogue system that I can just use my bar code reader to input most of the stuff?

🇬🇧: A mini-festival for new Norwegian ttrpgs next weekend. (I’m not going this year, but there are a lot of nice, creative people there, trying out more or less finished concepts.)

Pretty pleased with running a one-shot game of "Ghostbusters, Oslo 1986". Based on the 1986 1st ed game, I swapped out the resolution system with some card draws, and also let the players influence scenes by drawing cards with prompts like "A love relationship: Describe its effects" or "Functional error: Something does not work as intended". Offbeat characters, wacky plot, great fun. We were at a cabin, and one player even made a comic for the guest book. (In Norwegian only, sorry).

Uh-oh... Volunteered to run something Ghostbusters-themed for a trip with the gaming group Friday night... Now to get a light system in place and prep a one-shot adventure!

Issue 4: Pirates of our free collaborative ttrpg zine Unnamed Worlds is out. Try to break into the impenetrable fort on Tortuga, fly skyships across a gas giant, and play pirates are revolutionaries.

Contributions welcomed of short fiction, adventures, worlds, blog posts, art, cartoons, random tables etc that fit the minimal rules and world focussed feel.

Read the original Thieves World anthology from 1979. It was ...entertaining, even if feeling a little dated. A medieval sprawling city, like a R. E. Howard fever dream about a medieval mix of London and Baghdad, full of nobles, warriors, merchants, beggars, thieves and, eh, well, ...«harlots». Adventure, magic and peril around every corner, with a revolving cast of characters. It was fun, but a little too dusty, harsh, bloodied and smelly for my taste. Have you read it? #bookreview

Finally saw Project Hail Mary, fortunately having avoided spoilers. A solid, unique sci-fi film. I was not expecting a charming comedic drama -- a nice change from more traditional thriller-horror-tragedies-in-space. What especially stood out for me was the many creative and original music choices. No traditional symphonics here, which worked really well. And Ryan Gosling probably deserves an Oscar. Recommended. #scifi #moviereview
