Went washer/dryer shopping today. The Electrolux looked keen, but the salesperson warned us it doesn't have an app.
Oh no! How will I ever get my clothes clean if I can't have a cloud connection and embedded consumer spyware?

It is well known that laundry was impossible before 2007.
@courtney Doesn't have an app? That sounds like a dream purchase.
@courtney When I bought my oven, I paid a bit _more_ for last year's top end model, which was the last non-connected one.
No wifi on my oven thank you very much!
@amyworrall My range has features that it's holding hostage until I connect it to the network. Not gonna happen.
@courtney they replaced the washers & dryers here with ones that require an app. There's less functionality and the timers are never accurate
@PizzaDemon Sure, but maybe now you'll get more relevant ads.
ikr? The p.o. installed brand-I-will-not-name line, all of which require wifi access to use the advanced features, which I am never going to give them.
But the w/d were super dumb; they do not even have a buzzer to say when the cycle is done.
Looking forward to the others dying an untimely death.
@courtney 😅👍
@courtney The answer is Speed Queen.
@maccruiskeen @courtney
Just coming in to say this. We bought a Speed Queen commercial washer. No app and everything but the ON switch is a physical knob.
@maccruiskeen That would be >$2000 more. Can't justify it.
@courtney hope you told them that is a selling feature and now you REALLY want to buy it.
@tootbrute Yeah, told them we thought "no app" is a positive for us.
@courtney for home appliances, I found the research at Worse on Purpose very helpful in unravelling the brands and Venture Capital induced quality failures.

@brian Thanks for the pointer. I'll check it out.
@courtney
And was it more expensive?
"Smart" appliances (especially TVs) are often cheaper because they sell your data.
Yeah, the washing machine is reporting you to Tide. For "advertising purposes"
did you ask them something like "do a lot of people prefer an app washer ?"
or "is the app one cheaper ?"
@failedLyndonLaRouchite Told him "no app" was a feature for us.
@courtney I just bought a dryer without an app or a steam clean feature or a sanitizer. It's like my 20 year old dryer that died tonight. I just want a metal box with a heating element and a tub that tumbles the wet clothes around. I don't want any more than that. I had to skip through fancy dryers to find the one basic model that suits me. It was also on sale, unexpected bonus. I hope it lasts another 20 years! Good luck!
@courtney so u bought it
@courtney I would consider lack of an app to be a positive buying signal.
@courtney we got an Electrolux about six years ago but for some reason didn't bring it and the matching dryer to the next house. Decently engineered. And no goddamn app.
@the_turtle Glad that was your experience. I'm liking it a lot, but need to make sure it will fit in the space.
@courtney Electrolux's problem is that they don't support machines for very long.
My rather expensive heatpump dryer had the pump controller board die. Couldn't get one for love nor money, just 5 years after purchase
@sortius Yikes! Thanks for that info.
@courtney cheers 😁
@courtney Everything appliance that needs physical interaction to do its work (think fridge, dishwasher, washer, oven, ...) is perfectly fine without an app.
@courtney but without embedded consumer spyware in laundry machines, how will they find people who launder their money?
@courtney I recently went with the Electrolux after much research.
@dexter Happy with your choice?
We ordered ours today, so hoping for the best.
