@pcdevil well such a project would have a been impossible without the help of AI at least for me, believe me I tried in the past to do this exactly (back in 2010 using Silverlight as a platform) but it's too much work to build and maintain the data. AI helps a lot here. I'm sorry that's blocking you from using it.

@pcdevil @terratempora oh I was pretty sure it was, most new projects that say *nothing* about it are actually slop. Otherwise they are now proud to advertise as "no ai used".

thanks for confirming it. it saved a lot of time.

    @pcdevil @terratempora so be it.

i'm unable to use blender. so what? if I want to build 3d stuff, I will learn blender. I will not ask claude to it for me.

people are SO LAZY with ai now. They're subcontacting intelligence. Sooner or later it will backlash VERY severely.

@f4grx @terratempora and these people believe that an idea is the most important part of a project, while this cannot be farther from the truth.

when I see a project like this I think "wow, someone worked hard on it! they must have a deep knowledge in X and Y topics!" - this thought immediately disappears if it's slop.

someone used a gen-"ai", LLM that scraped ALL the internet and did a sloppy job to stitch them together. and then they seek for applause while that's not remarkable AT ALL.

@terratempora Feedback: 1) do not mark Crimea as russian (or mark all annexed territories as russian), 2) how exactly Don cossacks become Astrakhan khanate? 3) Czechoslovakia at no point in history was a part of USSR (see attachment), 4) "it's claude's fault" is not acceptable response

Czechoslovakia as a part of ussr in 1984

@victor_tokarev Him thanks for your feedback, actually it's not claude's fault the data come from other opendata source as mentioned in the source tab: Cliopatria and Wikipedia. If you want you can use the feature in the website to report wrong or missing data and I will fix them.

    *sigh*

history is not data. it should be obvious, especially if you were an actual coder: in version control, the most important “data” isn’t the diff but the comments.

a code repository is a historical artifact. understanding the nuances of those changes is what makes the code valuable. in other words, in its history, code becomes actual software.

so to treat History as just data tells us you don’t understand history as a technology in and of itself.

@victor_tokarev @terratempora this was the first place i went to check as well as i was born in czechoslovakia... and it struck me it was marked as part of the ussr since 1968. i tried to explain it out as very weird interpretation of the state of things after 1968 soviet invasion so i went to check to around ww2 and the data is complete utter mess. i investigated where the source data comes from and although it started as (much smaller) academic dataset it was ultimately compiled by some company using "AI"... so actuall yes, it is claude (or chatgpt or whatever) fault. sorry, i love the idea but this project is a prime example for why not to use LLM for this kind of work. it does more harm than good.

@terratempora nice project, strongly suggest you use the dev time with your fingers on visually differentiating it from other AI works.

There is a homogenization of art and design where these things trend toward an average and as pattern recognizers we’re really good at picking up on them and a lot of people will write them off even if they are ok with AI-assisted dev.

The Culture on Fedi is going to absolutely roast you though but at least you didn’t make something uninteresting or corporate.

@terratempora also, beware relying on LLMs to write prose for you. Even your header has the word globe in it twice, and in the Claude font, AND with the Claude italics.

This stuff really grates after the 27th time we see it even if the underlying idea is really cool - sweating this stuff matters and if you don’t use those skills you’ll wind up as someone who doesn’t write readmes anymore and people will just ignore your work totally which would be unfortunate for you.

    Very neat concept though.

@Gargron Good question, the data are not generated by the AI, expect for few specific changes mentioned in the source. Most of these borders are coming from Cliopatria, some from Wikipedia.
