oh right so games/software can be decompiled/cloned at will and nobody did anything; but it takes 1 person trying to remove spyware from their TV OS and they got banned. I am not surprised obviously. Honestly if this is the type of stuff someone is using those tools go for it. They could disappear for all I care, but if the tools exist, show 'em. source: bsky.app/profile/esqueer.net/p

Someone reverse engineered their Samsung TV using codex. They found that Samsung TVs were using always on mics, network mapping, and all kinds of Spyware that would collect data and sell it to data brokers.

A day later, their openai account was banned and frontier labs cracked down on doing this

@djlink yeah, it's the same thing with the Adobe Suite being recreated for free. AI is based upon taking all the information from the web without permission, so let's see it being used for things without permission.
The tech bros opened Pandora's box against the interest of many people. Seems like fitting Karma when people start using the tech against tech bros' interests as well. 🤷
The only thing I am afraid could happen is that regulations will only target regular users.

@djlink AI fine for plagiarizing indie art, not for exposing corrupt and illegal corporations.

    Sigh... I hate this timeline.

@h1_x the spyware part is true, as for the reverse the OS there were several posts a few days ago about something progressively taking out stuff before this block, but yeah, could be fake marketing from them I guess.

@djlink@mastodon.gamedev.place I repeatedly tried to get GPT-6.1 Sol to create a fuzzing harness and verify a bunch of shit about the eMudhra CA revocations recently and it just kept denying requests

they didn't ban me for that, and even at a glance it's clearly more dangerous than decompiling some TV software lol

@djlink@mastodon.gamedev.place none if it matters anyway because Deepseek from a hosted API (with safety turned on) completed a full hack against an embedded router in 30 minutes flat without complaining at all, as well as doing fuzzing work

I think the chinese models generally perform better on the "trust me bro" cyber benchmarks anyway, so theoretically, you're better off using the less censored model to begin with

@djlink I could not be less surprised. The “alignment problem” has always been about making sure the corporate-controlled tools aren’t used against the corporations.

@djlink i'm not saying we're ruled by a tech mafia ... because i don't have to even say it

@djlink Please don't spread misinformation. There is no way to verify the claim that the person was banned, even less so that it correlates. As for the TV spyware thing, it is misleading, of course a TV that you can talk to (voice search, etc) has such function listed in the code, nothing proves in the post that it is spyware/malicious.

@djlink This does fall under "the oppressed cannot use the tools of the oppressor to free themselves from the oppressor" to me.

@djlink LG and Samsung catch with their hands dirty so may we assume all major vendors are doing the same trick until they prove otherwise.

    @djlink
Data brokerage ought to be banned. Just completely banned. And GDPR-like laws that assume everyone always click No to everything and makes that the baseline that all websites must follow.
Any cookie that tracks you beyond the origin website should be illegal spyware.

Yes, that would impact the economics of the web a lot.
    GOOD.

@djlink the “tools” are NOT valid and must NOT be used. please learn better than to justify sloperatorhood in any case
