@danielaKay Huh! i never questioned these claims, Japan's own broadcaster (NHK) spread these ideas, i remember a documentary about Okinawa old ladies, but they are in their 80s, not over 100.

@adamshostack @danielaKay @sleepycat I know nothing about 7th Day Adventists but one of the other "lifestyle" advantages that sometimes shows up in life expectancy is having a funtional public healthcare system. I had a former colleague 20y ago who got surprise cancer. He happened to be married to a Japanese national and had dual citizenship so quit and moved to Japan, he said that the hospitals there have more experience with oncology and better facilities due to all the geriatric care they perform. I don't know what happened but he planned to live there rather than be a statistic here, which def affects the life expectancy calculation

@danielaKay I suppose it isn't really humorous, but I did chuckle at the lady hiding her father's corpse to continue collecting his benefits.
On the other hand, the real economic impact - to women, in particular - of losing the benefits of a spouse is very real. One of the consistent warnings in the (US) SS info I've seen is the double whammy of losing a spouse in retirement. Not only is the income lost, but the survivor becomes single and the tax code takes a bigger bite. 🙁
