    RE: toot.cafe/@baldur/117359189672

Unfortunately, I can confirm all of this. I only have one in-person workshop this year. Before I had a couple of them every year. My online workshops aren't going well, either. I have two coming up, which I may have to cancel.

Workshops have been a big source of income for me, but I think that's over now. I'm already working on a plan B, but it's not going to be in education and not even in web dev.

@matuzo I'm so sorry, Manuel. I see it left and right and it sucks so hard. What happens when the experts in the field no longer publish or teach? First, nobody will notice, because our fancy new chat overlords take over for most people, but then there will be this gaping hole of vanished knowlege and nothing new that will come afterwards. This is going to kick in so hard. But until then, all the experts will have vanished too because their liveiloods and/or their motivation has been destroyed.

@matuzo I hate all of this so much. We have a similar issue with our docs for Kirby. We don't rely on that part financially, but why would you still invest passion, time and money into a resource that's no longer actively consumed by humans? We know that we would hurt ourselves in the long-term, but it takes the joy out of it and that's already pretty devastating.

I think we are watching the profession of a developer (as we know it) dying - maybe splitting into “mass production” and “hand crafting”.

The LLMs are just too good. Every developer I work with on a regular both likes it (as a tool) and hates it - because management is pushing further and further, transforming devs into “planners” and “reviewers” - and the person ultimately responsible. And at some place in the future obsolete as well.

The craftsmanship and the reason why most picked this profession dies. And I think at lot of job offers will die with it. People feel this.

Is it more of the same? Yes!!!
Is it waaaaay faster? Also yes.
Will a lot of jobs be gone over the next years? Most likely. Depends how long LLM are offered with prices like now.
    Will this harm society? Absolutely

But the reality is, we are already right into it and I don’t see a way out or back. 🫤

@matuzo totally feeling you, I can’t find a job since April when I was fired because the company wanted to focus “more on AI and less on web development “

As the market is dead for juniors, highly difficult for generalists like me and slightly better for seniors, I’ll have to start looking for jobs that just pay the bills and have nothing to do with web development 😭

@matuzo Same here! I can’t help thinking that eventually, the pendulum will swing back (but it may take a while):

    • Software is getting more and more buggy. Before long, we’ll need a lot of people who can fix things.

    • If LLMs remain in wide-spread use in the future, someone knowledgeable has to feed them. Good content is rapidly disappearing from the web.

@rauschma I'm sure it will but I'm not sure if I can run my business long enough without losing too much money (I just bought a house in need of renovation from money I inherited and I have three kids) and I'm unsure if the job in the future is as fun and fulfilling as it was.

@matuzo our corporate training budget for this year is zero. No conferences, no trainings, not even a 20€ ebook. Nobody cares anymore, nothing is holy.

Sorry to bring AI into the discussion, but we do have 200€/month/developer token budget for Claude Enterprise.

We traded 500€ per annum training budget for 2400€ token budget. Genius!

@matuzo I'd happily pay a monthly fee for a "blog" or wiki in which you'd be publishing articles or videos about accessibility. Have you ever considered something along these lines?
