    It resonates with me a lot probably also because of my recent cult deep dive I've been on.

    I also think it sounds like an evolution of their music but not the same as the other albums. I think each of their albums sounds different from the last one.

    Some heavier sounds and more forward drums on this one as well which is a nice switchup.

    Maybe I'm one of the die hards mentioned in the Guardian review that people should ignore. Idk. I like it.

    but like also i didn't go to the record store listening party because my relationship with music is very personal. so people are going to get what they get out of it. i don't really care about people's opinions who think it's overrated or got overhyped because they waited so long. i probably won't be reading any more reviews

    also as a reminder to those who say it sounds too much like boards of canada

    remember when Tomorrow's Harvest was considered so different that people hated it for a long time? they can't win

    also there are some scales i haven't heard them use much before, not just in the stuff referencing eastern mysticism, like the little lead that comes in on the third track

    the one thing i'm maybe not into is some of the vocal samples, esp the low garbly one on Prophecy, it kind of goes on too long

    The cult my grandparents were elders in/my dad grew up in (see also my big-ass 2x2 church thread) doesn't allow being a musician or listening to any music that isn't specifically approved hymns sung out loud from their book Hymns, Old And New, to the point where there are stories about workers snapping the antennas off people's cars at the convention.

    so a whole album on this theme feels a little illicit in a nice way

    @forestine yeah i’ve been trying to pinpoint this, kind of the only thing that’s put me off a bit too. i think some of the pitch correction/manipulation on the vocal samples sound… off? to me… and i can’t tell if it feels, like, divided by an era from the rest of the production, if i just don’t like the sound of the tool they’re using, if it’s just a bit much, etc…

    @forestine wait for real??? i remember listening and thinking a lot of it felt a little too similar to MHTRTC and Geogaddi era, compared to what felt like a major aesthetic shift on CFHP 😅

    anyway, they punished me for my criticism by waiting 13 years, if the new release sounds too much like boards of canada then i am ready to appreciate that for the beautiful gift it is.

    @forestine

    a secret thing about music i wish i had thought more about as a teenager: you can just listen to and like music regardless of other peoples' opinions.

    i had no idea that so much music in the local punk scene was inspired by Bad Religion. i had never listened to anything by them back then, and only gave them a listen very recently cause i remembered that was something i had never done.
