this has always been something that felt intimidating about bike maintenance and i’ve kind of avoided learning about it for that reason. and i wasn’t trying to figure it out now either, i just took apart the bike pedal thinking there must be something i can slap grease on in there. cleaned it and played with the parts until i figured out the contraption and how it adjusts.
then a whole day later i realize 🤯 this is how all the bearings on my bikes work
spent a half hour tinkering with a bike pedal i didn’t care if i ruined, and suddenly i understand adjustable bearings.

i don’t want to derail rabbit’s thread by making it about transfem stuff, but i think that kind of casual “all men are trash” talk is *also* a significant roadblock to transfems figuring out our gender. it was for me at least. i spent years atoning for being born with a gender i didn’t even want, and the only way i knew to not be trash was to make myself as small as possible. that doesn’t feel safe for exploring queerness.

pretty cool to have stumbled on a little time capsule. if it were a bike i were going to ride, i’d seriously consider keeping it all stock or sticking to a few period-appropriate upgrades.
…but luckily im otherwise not precious about this stuff at all lmao. my partner wouldn’t want to ride the stock configuration so let’s do this rebuild. stoked to have such a clean, well-stored frame to build something really cool from.
i’ve started to dig in to this bike a little more and i’m realizing not only was it absolutely 100% factory stock components when i picked up…i don’t think this bike has been ridden more than 15 miles since it was bought. it has a few scrapes and scuffs so i figured maybe it got ridden a bit but now im thinking those are strictly from storage.
specifically, the tires are miyata-branded (meaning they are OEM as well, miyata was not a tire company), and have nearly no tread wear.
