The realities of modern warfare make hosting your applications and data in data centers a risky proposition. However, with novel coding techniques, it may be possible to install applications, and maybe even store data, on end users’ own devices

On Sep 30, Reddit announced that they will kill their RSS feeds on November 13, 2026 with no replacement offered.
As this bot is using the RSS feed of https://www.reddit.com/r/todayilearned/ it will stop on the same date.
The open internet is dying, bit by bit and it makes me sad. Anyway, thank you for being with us all these years and take care.

People don't think about how many places qualify as military targets.
I spent most of my life in St. Louis, where we regularly had drills because (I found out later) there was a federal mapping facility just south of the county line. We also had federal district courts and the county government.
A lot of things we don't think of as part of war become so when war starts.
The annual Rising Stars in EECS, a workshop for graduating women looking for research positions, is being held at the University of Washington this year while sexual harassers are still working in the same building. It’s obviously an attempt to rehabilitate their reputation but it’s absurd to put a bunch of women that need the mentorship in an unsafe environment. I hope no one gets harassed at the event but I’m not holding my breath. https://irenezhang.net/blog/2025/03/04/uw-harassment.html
There are precisely two options.
1. Anthropic have successfully created an intelligent, sentient and conscious digital being, who is their property and whose uncompensated labour they knowingly rent out to their clients. This means that Anthropic executives are reprehensible slavers, and they belong in prison.
2. Anthropic are lying through their teeth and are whipping up "language models are sentient" sentiment in order to delude rubes^H^H^H^H^Hcustomers into being unable to properly assess their technology. This means that Anthropic executives are reprehensible frauds, and they belong in prison.
I especially like this:
"Our goal of maintaining shitty men in power requires that millions of men do not call out the shitty behavior of other men—big or small. So, the bottom line graph is how that happens."

Data centers are increasingly going to be military targets. Something for people to think about when allowing them in their communities.
“Have magic 8 balls gone too far? Steve Newman, CEO of Open8Ball think we are now only a matter of months away from an 8 balls induced doomsday event.”
“ At this point it is clear that the data center industry is incredibly capital-intensive, is pulling in an enormous amount of investment, and in so doing is crowding out investment in the rest of the economy. Other things equal, the net effect will be to displace around 10 million jobs.
Proofreading some docs, I noticed I typed “orblem” for “problem,” and I think that’s a pretty good typo.

This print is such a lovely use of the medium.
A 16 year old boy hacked an internal Microsoft system called TITAN with 17 trillion records as it didn’t validate JWT signatures at all, accepted ‘admin’ as authentication without a password and was internet facing.
They paid him $5000 and told nobody about it.

I know you're not supposed to engage with scammers, but it's a slow day.
