The annual Rising Stars in EECS, a workshop for graduating women looking for research positions, is being held at the University of Washington this year while sexual harassers are still working in the same building. It’s obviously an attempt to rehabilitate their reputation but it’s absurd to put a bunch of women that need the mentorship in an unsafe environment. I hope no one gets harassed at the event but I’m not holding my breath. irenezhang.net/blog/2025/03/04

To advisors, don’t send your graduating women students to Rising Stars. To my knowledge, at least 2 men that sexually harassed graduate women are still there. The culture has probably just gotten worse as I’ve heard that the men think they’ve done nothing wrong.

This is really unfortunate. Although I didn’t think the workshop had much use, the networking opportunities were invaluable, and I made some really good friends there.

@atsuzaki yeah and Ben Shapiro, who literally compared me to Trump, is chairing the whole thing. I should just release some of his FOIA’d emails. They are horrible. He acts like an ally but is super toxic
