Oct 14, 2026, 11:52 PM@mcc I guess the corollary here is that you cannot fall _out_ of the computer tree. you can only fall _down_ the computer tree

And down the compute rabbit computer rabbit hole we go.

@JessTheUnstill @viq @mcc the only reason I would disagree is with "on steroids", it seems exactly the same as timesharing
Krzysztof Sakrejda 🏳️⚧️ 🏴☠wronglang@bayes.clubOct 15, 2026, 1:05 AM@glyph @JessTheUnstill @viq @mcc at least with time sharing they're usually more honest about what a CPU is

@wronglang @JessTheUnstill @viq @mcc I am unqualified to judge this statement! I am assuming this is some kind of swipe at whatever a "vCPU" is, but could you say more?

@glyph
I assume notorious overcommitment of VMs versus what resources the host has.

@glyph @JessTheUnstill @viq @mcc actually most of my experience is with SLURM clusters where if you're getting crap performance because the other part of a machine is being tortured somehow (or just failing) you have visibility into that, so the whole "vCPU" things is aesthetically offensive. Vendors patronize people by listing cost per vCPU when you have to benchmark what that means across vendors anyway (and benchmark results aren't fixed). Huge waste of time.
