As others have pointed out, there could be an influx of newcomers to the #Fediverse from #Brazil who are tired of #Meta 's latest shenanigans while meddling with politics.
If you see them, be friendly and welcoming, and under no circumstances start with "You are using the Fediverse wrong!"
I mean it. We have a serious "Reply Guy" problem around here, and we've already lost our big chance with Black Twitter. Let's not screw _this_ opportunity up, okay?

How many fediverse users are capable of reading and replying in Portuguese? Brazillians might actually get to be left alone by most of us.

Well, I am German, but most of my posts are in English.
I wouldn't be surprised if many Brazilians also post in multiple languages.

This is the old fediverse. Newcomers behave just as they did in the old social media they've just left.

@juergen_hubert @ditol Brazilian here, admin from an instance founded after Black Twitter.
Many Brazilians post in multiple languages and some Mastodon instances have translation plug-ins.

@ditol I follow some of them as I follow people around the world. Imagine that Brazilian people are able to speak more than one language only!
And know that we have a machine translation for posts on many instances. https://fedi.tips/is-there-a-built-in-language-translation-system-on-mastodon/
Thanks to that, I can even communicate with people who know only Finnish or Chinese. Or German. 😜

So? I am fluent in several languages and able to read in another 2. I still post almost exclusively in German (especially on topics concerning primarily German audiences) and reply in English only if this is the language of the thread. I hardly ever come across postings in languages I don't speak, be it Portuguese, Iranian or whatever. Or even Dutch, although I actually follow several people from the Netherlands. And this is not because there are no Portuguese or Iranian (or Dutch) speakers on the fediverse. But I would have to actively work to communicate with them and who does this except few people? It's not like language is a hard and impeneteable barrier, but it is a very good filter.

@ditol Calm down, see the irony signal in my post.
Fortunately, the Fediverse is used in as many different and varied ways as there are people, and no one does exactly the same as everyone else.
So let's not play the typical "Mastodon police" for newcomers. That's all what was asked for.

Written text is quite bad at communicating intent, irony etc. I am relaxed. :) And what I've been trying to tell, was: thanks to the language barrier most of us won't get to play mastodon police against Brazillian newcomers, so they'll be just fine. ;)
The so called Black Twitter's misfortune was that it was a (primarily or almost completely?) US based and thus English speaking phenomenon. Therefore they became an easy prey so to say for the "regular" or "established" fediverse. A Brazillian "Black Twitter" (if Brazillian society works in such a racist way as the US-American one, I don't know) would rather struggle with the absent algorithms and the bubble-like structure of the fediverse. :)

@ditol @NatureMC @juergen_hubert That's also what I noticed frequently, US American tendencies generalized - the perceived being US is the default.

far as I can tell, mastodon has about 800,000 monthly active users
which means that mastodon is so increidbly tiny it is like flea on the elephant of FB or twitter

@juergen_hubert Whenever I reply to a post from someone I haven't interacted yet, like from a followed hashtag; there's this notice about just what you mention.
To be kind and beware that one replies to someone we don't know.
Basically don't be a dick but nicer.
I think in general it's a good idea to be a bit forgiving and beware we reply to someone we don't know.

Solche Zuschreibungen sind nicht wirklich konstruktiv, ähnlich wie der Pastor, der sich im Gottesdienst über zu wenig Besuch beklagt.

@juergen_hubert@mementomori.social that post encapsules very well the a common behavior on the fediverse: An inclusive and welcoming attitude. Sympathetic and encouraging to good causes and hopeful for the future. And I'm proud of that attitude. But to the newcomers let me interpret the last paragraph: (Just make sure to sing the same chorus as everyone else on the replies.)

I would actually find it a great relief to see a s***ton of Brazilians show up here.
I always worry about governments shutting this place down (because Fedi operators don't monetize their users and therefore can't afford age verification). It'll be a lot harder politically to shut Fedi down if it'd involve a significant fraction of the country losing their main hangout for no good reason.

@juergen_hubert @LabSpokane There is no wrong way to use Mastodon.
If I don't like the way someone is using it — for example, for constant shameless self promotion or begging for money — I just block that account. What I think is "wrong" may be perfectly fine with others. No one should be lecturing.🤷🏼‍♀️

@juergen_hubert BTW, the problem is so big that it touches even the admins and moderators. Beside money problems (not enough donations), they are suffering from an increasingly harsh tone. The latest in the line to give up here: https://mastodon.online/@support@toot.community/116999041760030897
