Additionally the "fix" fixes more than 40 separate issues in a single mega-commit touching 68 files which like. This is really beyond "you are trusting the slop machine too much". This is "the moment the slop machine got in your hands, a switch flipped in your head and you were like 'I never have to follow any engineering standards, any at all, ever again'". To repeat once again: "AI" is not a technology, it is a permission structure

"Computer" is `cat /dev/urandom | bash` and nothing else, forever

@mcc i've... independently made the discovery that the current state of nim seems to be going in the direction of progressively turning into slop, when i looked into whether i wanna consider picking it up.
it's not *super* obvious looking in from the outside, but this was the smoking gun for me (scroll down to the post by exelotl):
    forum.nim-lang.org/t/14160

(also incidentally, good to learn @exelotl is also on fedi hiiiiii)

@jupiter @bnuuy @exelotl I mean what I actually did was stopped using nim around 2016 because their response to "the js output doesn't really work" was "yeah, we only really care about asm.js now" which was about four to six years too early to play that

@mcc @jupiter @bnuuy there is a fork called nimskull by former Nim contributors who got fed up at the leadership, and seems like an overall healthier project, but as they aim to shed cruft and gain rigour/correctness there will be breaking changes and it may be a while before it becomes a stable foundation for any project.

The devs don't like or use AI but I wasn't able to convince them to adopt a no-AI policy, so its a bit in limbo at the moment in that regard.

@technomancy @mcc oh yeah i wrote a whole post on that. unfortunately it was on cohost. :(

anyway, iirc the project lead handled some transphobia in the community badly. and i think there were other dicey things he said.

on the technical side, fwiw, i remember getting the sense it was more of a playground for the project lead to experiment with language and compiler design than a stable language.

@mcc Corollary: there are a bunch of people working on software who view engineering standards as an annoyance impeding what they want to do, rather than as the way you go about making something that actually works. 😱

@dalias just like lawyers no longer have to go doing that annoying work of looking up citations for their claims. the llm will just make up a plausible sounding case

@wcbdata @dalias radiologists have had it good for too long! llms mean that an enthusiastic hobbyist can perform chemoradiation therapy just as good as some fancy ass "medical doctor"
