@veronica Same! Two of my clients have banned Apple hardware from the premises. The guideline is anything that runs Siri AI or is capable of video and audio recording. It’s crazy how people are ok with surveillanceware.
A "programming language" is a computer program that creates a multi-gigabyte folder somewhere inside ~/.local and never tells you about it
we recommend NOT using credential management provided by a phone, laptop, or operating system vendor, because they'll do abusive lock-in shit, you know they will, it's bad shit for all the obvious commercial reasons, and you should not convince yourself otherwise
(most of these vendors call their credential management "passkeys", but the word "passkey" does not refer to any specific piece of the technology, it's a marketing term that different vendors use differently)
we recommend using hardware security tokens, via either webauthn or the older u2f, to secure your high-value accounts
your high-value accounts are: email, personal infrastructure, domain registration... anything that gives an attacker power over other things. email is the most important for almost everyone, since it can be used to reset everything else
Got a reply to the poll bringing up Thomas Nagel's "you can't know what it feels like to be a bat" thought experiment, and I was like well I don't think it's so hard, wouldn't being a bat just be like when you listen to music and the music has a shape? But then I remembered probably most people don't experience music as a series of three-dimensional volumes. Y'all can't even taste words can you
Anyway, point is, people think understanding bats is hard but other people is easy. And they're wrong

@ciaranmak@mastodon.ie actually, i will still boost this, but i'm putting a note here since the video maker is building a platform that lets you vibe-code mobile apps (source: their website, linked on their instagram), which is, of course, bad for reasons that shouldn't be explained at this point, so keep that in mind if you wanna follow him in the future
but yeah i was just talking with someone about how mobile games have become a hellhole when it comes to the money-making schemes they pull and didn't even consider that some of them would have stuff under the hood. not the least bit surprising though. they probably look at loopholes in the guidelines of the storefronts they submit to and exploit the ever-living shit out of 'em
Everyone needs to see this and also acknowledge why reverse engineering is a super power.

Guy reverses the dark patterns of mobile apps and publishes it, absolutely love it!
Btw I have heard at least one prominent FOSS person (I'm choosing to not fill their notifications here by identifying them) that nobody cares about attribution requirements (and particularly not enforcing them). But to me, attribution is what I care about MORE than any other licensing requirements, more than copyleft "share-alike" style provisions, etc.
If you feel similarly, it would be good to hear on this thread. Perhaps even copying a similar notice into your project is a good idea.
PSA: Google is silently linking your phone number across all signed-in accounts https://www.androidauthority.com/google-auto-phone-number-verification-android-3723117/
Anyone surprised by this? Every AI and tech company wakes up each day asking the same question. How can we build an even bigger surveillance network, squeeze more profit out of it and turn George Orwell’s 1984 into reality? At this point, they are not predicting the dystopian future. They’re building it and charging its users for it. Truly evil stuff.
We now note that that we do not waive our attribution requirements for Spritely Goblins, which are present in Apache v2 (and for that matter, CC BY, CC BY-SA, and most FOSS licenses) https://codeberg.org/spritely/goblins/pulls/998/files
So if you train on our codebase, you have to retain attribution, which we consider the most important requirement to motivate development of technology in the commons.
If, somehow, you are using a statistical soup which has no way to preserve attribution, well, we don't permit or approve of dropping such a requirement, and actually, the licenses we use never have.
Downloading Librewolf and noting with approval, and additionally almost uniquely among open source software I've installed on Windows, they actually tell you on the download page who to expect the binaries be signed by.
Hm, hoping LibreWolf integrates with my updates on Debian when it comes to that.
Oh, this box has been open in the background the whole time. "LOL". Obviously, there is literally no way I am going to agree to a "terms of use" to use a goddamn fucking web browser on my own computer.
If I'm angry it's because I *believed* I would be informed when 140ESR, the version of Firefox I agreed to use, would time out, and therefore I would have time to install Librewolf myself rather than having "Firefox I trust, somewhat" replaced out from under me on my computer with "Firefox I would rather not have any copy of my computer, at all".

@mcc @eramdam It's probably too late now, but I think this is the policy that you would have needed to prevent updating from 140.

"You always have a choice in Firefox, including whether to use features enhanced with AI". LIARS! FUCKING LIARS!! THE "BLOCK AI" SWITCH UNDERNEATH THIS WAS TURNED *OFF*! YOU SILENTLY UPGRADED MY WEB BROWSER WHILE MICROSOFT WAS REBOOTING MY COMPUTER IN THE NIGHT, YOU ADDED A BUNCH OF SECRET AI BULLSHIT YOU DID NOT DISCLOSE TO ME, YOU HAD IT TURNED ON BY DEFAULT, and then you have the fucking GALL to say I had a fucking "choice"
Get outa here with your fucking cutesy fox mascot for the apocalypse
Your art at its “worst” is still better than AI
