#selfhosted So I am trying to set up a Nextcloud instance on a VPS server I have rented out for the next year. And it's quite a trek through a maze of security. At least I'm familiar with Linux.

I just want a space I can share with family for various files and pics, and I got a domain name for my own email server - outside Google.

But now that I got an email with tuta, I wonder if getting a syncthing with the kids wouldn't be just as efficient, since I have libre office anyways.

@Sassinake I've been on nextcloud for a long time (since before the owncloud/nextcloud split). Once you get over the hurdles, it's pretty painless to run. I do synchronised calendars, contacts, to-do lists, and so on via CardDAV and CalDAV for a family of 5.

The learning curve is just "what do you call it in Nextcloud when I want to do this particular thing?"

I will say this, all of that was harder for the 6 days I tried to use Android instead of iOS. I needed all these little helper apps on Android. It was a pain and I went back to my iPhone. I don't use iCloud for anything and my iPhone doesn't care. Email, calendars, contacts, todo, notes: all of it is done self-hosted. (email and todos are done by IMAP on my mail server, the others are done by nextcloud).

@paco @Sassinake The main thing I use it for these days is syncing bookmarks and Todo lists. We use Android so no I'm not currently syncing contacts and calendars. I'd like to, but it had to be family friendly.

I'm really happy with my bookmarks sync though and just started doing Todo lists.
