Hey #Mastodon, how do I turn off the deeply stupid popup that offers to change the language of my posts to something completely random on the new front end? I don't see any setting named "autodetect language" or anything, which is odd given that the "feature" is worse than useless.

I have long noticed that the ancient Greeks had a compulsion to attribute everything to an inventor, often implausibly so to someone very famous; I think I have found the apotheosis of this tendency in Aristotle attributing the invention of the baby rattle to "mathematician, music theorist, statesman, and strategist" Archytas.

True heads will understand

I love that during this mess eMudhra still find time to vote on the BRs (but not complete a root-cause analysis on the number 4)

More a snitch than a fess. I work in admin for a national courier firm. When you get those "how did the driver do?" feedback emails you are enabling their maximum profit business model by completing them. There are no area managers because you are doing the job for them for free.

the fun part about being me is that I've completely burned out all concept of embarrassment and if someone chooses to try to mess with me in that fashion I'm happy to go much farther than they're prepared to deal with.

kinda coming to the opinion that llm psychosis constitutes a psychiatric mass-casualty event.

thinking about how consent-oriented those interactions are, come to think of it.

yahoo grew along with the Webring, which was similarly a group of affiliated websites that would link to each other as part of a community.

thinking about the rapid degradation of search after the push to remove directory structures and the concept of folders from people's operating systems and phones.

thinking about how the early internet spawned Yahoo, a directory where people listed where to find websites about specific things,

that didn't have a search engine at first,

and only grew one of those later, after the directory had become enormous.

"In this case the court starts by stating, "This case presents the question of whether a bee is like a cow." The court held that bees are not like cows."

@foone @munin well it can calculate and the layout is not QWERTY so as long as you’re taking it in an E-jet it’s valid for the SAT

@munin Oh god zooming in to read small stuff just works

oh my gods it feels so good to interact with; it's so -clean- and -refreshing-

new sport just dropped

When European cockles (Cerastoderma edule) are young, they attach with byssal threads to algae and other objects. Sometimes this carries them to new places (phoresis)! A new paper discusses that they sometimes also are observed attached to the whiskers of seals. No word on if they attach to the beards of clam men. #clamFacts

And now everyone is blocking crawlers, it's impossible to ever make a new search engine again.

Hooray!

this is how I know the dangers of llm 'hacks' "taking down the internet" are overblown: BGP still stands.

fuck you Apollo, you can't make this one happen.
