I forgave people's ignorance about J.K. Rowling 10 years ago

I forgave it 5 years ago, except in two long time romantic interests who purchased Hogwarts Legacy. claiming to get me better than anyone yet clearly not understanding me at all

but its 2026. if you're selling it, buying it, unboxing it for a video, I gotta figure you know its enabling a Trans Genocide and don't give a damn

@normjess As soon as I realised she was also ‘Robert Galbraith’ I stopped watching those filmed episodes. Harry Potter was good for getting my kids reading back in the day [in their 30’s now]; but none of us will entertain anything related to him/her about the place ever again. If I see any such books in the local store I turn them upside down and back to front… 😈

@normjess I would posit a possible exception to the broad brush... you *could* be an Auld Pharte who has only just discovered the very tip of the Internet iceberg and has no bl----y CLUE what a trans person is...

I am reasonably certain my mother the Luddite is in that class of people. I haven't broached the subject specifically yet.

Now, once I do, her reaction will absolutely have a bearing on the nature, indeed, the possible _existence_ of our continued relationship. As indeed it should for all such people once suitably clue-batted.

AND, yes, people who are _making videos_ (instead of just watching them aimlessly), who will doubtless *be* cluebatted within 0.0000001 seconds of posting such a vid, double down in any way? F them and the billionaires they rode in on.

    @stonebear2
I'm sure some people living under a rock have never seen a smartphone or anyone with a different skin tone

but that's not the vast majority of people

if cis people were being removed from society, and trans people were buying products that fund it, you better believe cis people wouldn't have sympathy for any ignorance

last month clothing brands and fast food companies suddenly decided they could start doing Harry Potter themed stuff again. backlash over, nobody cares anymore

its probably to seed the ground for that TV show full of morally devoid actors generating capital for Rowling's favourite anti-trans organizations and then pretending to be neutral in press

the deepest cut will be when people who claim to be my friend buy Hogwarts Legacy 2 and then act like its me that is the problem for being mad

I feel you though. my mother does not support me. I look after her, but I've stopped loving her

@normjess Empathy right back atcha, also proof positive that the fash have been successful in either burying the topic or burying the hoi polloi give-a-damn...

And yeah, that little town in Tennessee is the next best thing to .... well, it is actually _on_ a rock. Eight hundred feet or so of semi-porous limestone; I drank from a well drilled in that stuff from ages 3-11. Cleanest water in five counties, and I never had a cavity until I moved to the 'burbs and started drinking city water. Five digit phone numbers; touch tone didn't work. I have *seen* more rural, but still...

AND yes, them as ARE on the intertoobs on the regular and still buy Her TERFness' stuff? F'em with a BARGEPOLE.

@normjess There is one genocide currently happening, and one very recent. I believe you should adjust your vocabulary if you want to be taken seriously.

@pavel @normjess oh! Sorry, I believe you don't know something and have come to foist your ignorance upon us. Cool.

Feel free to educate yourself about the various other indicators of genocide beside the one you know, about the ongoing campaign to eradicate transgender people, and then keep quiet.

@pavel one genocide? hahaha, tell me you're a european without telling me you're a european.

    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transgen

    > In January 2026, journalist Walker Bragman interviewed three genocide scholars who were concerned that the US was at the "early stages of committing genocide" against transgender people. Former presidents of the International Association of Genocide Scholars Henry Theriault and Gregory Stanton explained that the Trump administration wanted "to destroy a gender group," accuse them of corrupting traditional and family values, marginalize them socially and economically partly in order to urge them to kill themselves, and give tacit permission to law enforcers to use force specifically against them. Stanton and Haley Brown, experts on genocide, deemed these tactics to be "directly borrowed from the Nazis."[174][175] The third "Red Flag Alert" issued by the Lemkin Institute in March 2026, cited record-breaking increases in anti-transgender legislation and stated that "the United States is squarely within the early to middle stages of a genocidal process against trans people, the goal of which is to completely erase transgender people not only from public life but also from existence in the U.S. and globally."[176] The Lemkin Institute also highlighted the misinformation about transgender violence attempting to paint all transgender people as a threat to the US, pointing to a variety of high profile media individuals and senior officials of government departments such as Jim O'Neil of the Department of Health and Human Services.[176]

@jane As wikipedia explains, some people are trying to change meaning of word "genocide". I'm not a fan. Apparently, some people tried to change meaning of word "woman" before. J. K. Rowling was not a fan. Now I understand that a bit better.

@normjess by the time of Hogwarts Legacy, JKR was very publicly known as a terf. I am not particularly deep into the whole topic, but even *I* knew at the time.

@normjess not to detract from the original point here which stands on its own, but (even speaking as someone who in my ignorance unironically enjoyed the books when they came out), the books are full of overt racism and implicit misogyny. They are a comfortable (to a certain privileged and unintrospective class) package around a set of regressive ideas, like "slavery is okay as long as the slaves say they want it" and "some ethnic groups are inherently morally corrupt, including the greedy hook-nosed bankers" as well as the classic "destiny has selected yet another white man to save the world, who will be the only one to see through the evil ones' dastardly schemes" and he'll "beneficently tolerate the quirks of his diverse allies, unless they go too far in which case he'll helpfully correct them."
