“I thought FOSS was about technology, not identity” says a FOSSbro.

Well, Linus, if it was really about technology, every conference would have 51% women attendees and speakers, and a lot more gender minorities, and at least the current percentage of people from families that immigrated from global majority countries.

European tech conferences are very pale and male. If identity has nothing to do with this, and every human has an equal potential to be a computer enthusiast, how did this happen?

Maybe diversity isn’t the dominant “identity politics” in FOSS after all.

@JessTheUnstill @akareilly Someone said that maintaining a FOSS project is a white male privilege.

I was going to be mad, but when I thought about it, who else has the free time and means to spend hundreds or thousands of hours a year on a hobby project? A Black mother of three?

@vonxylofon @JessTheUnstill @akareilly I think this is the main (though certainly not only) issue. Most big problems in the world are probably not caused by individuals waking up every day by the millions and choosing to be assholes when they understand that choice. But I think most of those big problems definitely are driven by structural and systemic issues that can be really difficult to fix.

Also there are always a few assholes being assholes just because they want to. That doesn't help.
