This was the calmest Raven from the morning. They seem to be most tolerant of human presence at the beginning and end of the day, possibly coinciding with their grooming and self-maintenance tasks.
to really blow some minds bring up the fact that software needs to be hosted somewhere.
It will be called the
WHY THE FUCK DID NO ONE FUND THIS FUND
WFNOFTF pronounced wiffinofftiff
when the last grant proposal has been written and all the writers have run off to the bogs and forests, we will all of us be free
“…but Wren it sounds like your plan would abolish grant writing and yet, you are a grant writer.”
I said what I said, yes.
Give the grumpiest bastard grant writers several million euro and we will fix this shit.
- no asshole rule for funding
- diversity and INCLUSION INCLUDING RETAINING PEOPLE because hiring is worthless if everyone rage quits because your org is a dumpster fire
- multi-year funding for maintenance
- if someone maintains critical code, and the community describes them as a lovely person they would trust to guard their drink, they get a living wage for years to do whatever. Seriously this would work. It would be a better use of money than the current secret handshake and code word system of grant writing.
For years, it’s been common knowledge among grant writers for open source tech that putting maintenance of existing code in a proposal can tank the whole thing.
Funders, do you hear us now? Are you going to remember this week and let go of the new shiny object fixation?
Finally! Steve can get back from the pub safely.

Dear future #FOSDEM speakers / devroom organizers / attendees, will you take the #FOSDEMPledge ?

HUGE thanks to @janl for this brilliant initiative! ❤️
Maybe it wasn’t a good idea to select a Chancellor whose motivations can be summed up by “how dare that woman say no to me?”
I know history usually rhymes, not repeats, but a German political party hostile to disabled people, trans people, immigrants, and Jewish people is working with corporations to subvert democracy, and is also getting cozy with a right wing Russian government attacking Ukraine.
The centrists are more concerned with the left wing party than the blatant fascists.
They are more frightened of affordable housing than someone bombing apartment blocks.
@bridget Person 1: “Have you tried turning it off?”
Person 2: “… and on again?”
Person 1: “I said what I said.”
I've been following PHP2Shell, and while there's a lot of discussion about AI-assisted vulnerability discovery, I'm more interested in what happened around the fixes.
The PHP Foundation describes the technical and organisational difficulties involved, including limited resources, decision-making problems, and a dependence on a small number of people with deep knowledge of PHP's internals.
“I thought FOSS was about technology, not identity” says a FOSSbro.
Well, Linus, if it was really about technology, every conference would have 51% women attendees and speakers, and a lot more gender minorities, and at least the current percentage of people from families that immigrated from global majority countries.
European tech conferences are very pale and male. If identity has nothing to do with this, and every human has an equal potential to be a computer enthusiast, how did this happen?
Maybe diversity isn’t the dominant “identity politics” in FOSS after all.
Hey everyone,
@casey and @rania40 had the honour of speaking to one family from Gaza today and we’d like to welcome them to Gaza Verified.
They are:
• Kazem🍒in 🍒Gaza (@kazemabofares)
Please give them a warm welcome to Mastodon and to the fediverse, follow their account, and donate to their fundraiser if you can (and please share this so others can do the same).
Also, remember that you can find all our families who have fundraisers listed at the following page, ordered by those who have received the least in donations over the last week (on a rolling basis):
https://gaza-verified.org/donate/
Thank you for making Mastodon and the fediverse a safe space for our friends in Gaza and for your support.
💕

The cover of this week's New Statesman edition is an extraordinary intervention.
Just two weeks ahead of the Supreme Court hearing on the proscription of #PalestineAction, many of the world’s leading cultural icons have joined forces to condemn the “ill-conceived and draconian anti-terror legislation” which they describe as “an affront to basic principles of free speech and expression so long taken for granted in this country” and as “repressive absurdity”.
Signatories to the letter include Paul Mescal, Gary Lineker, Arundhati Roy, Naomi Klein, Paul Mescal, JM Coetzee, Tilda Swinton, Susan Sarandon, Tariq Ali, Irvine Welsh, Slavoj Žižek, Jonathan Glazer, Zadie Smith, Julian Barnes, Juliet Stevenson, Kate Nash, Kneecap, Maxine Peake, Michael Frayn, Michael Rosen, Monica Ali, Caryl Churchill, Colm Tóibín, Emily Wilson, William Boyd, William Dalrymple, and Shami Chakrabarti.
