    Okay, folks—things are escalating quickly! I was going to ask for an Ashford SampleIt #Loom for my birthday but in the meantime found a used 16” Ashford loom with a stand at a huge bargain. Feels like it’s meant to be.

    The previous owner left the warp threaded, which gives me an easy start. Every other hole and slot are threaded because she was using chunky art yarn, so I guess that’s what I’ll do, too. I welcome resources and advice getting started. #weaving #FiberArts #beginner

    A 16” rigid heddle loom on a stand in front of my bookshelf. The loom has colorful yarn partially woven into a textile piece (by the previous loom owner.) You can see part of a fireplace mantle off to the side in the background. There’s also a round leather ottoman in the ground behind the loom.

    @PermaSolarPotter have fun! Looks like a nice warp to be crazy with and get the motion down, but don't hesitate to cut it off early if it's not your cup of tea! Not sure if you're aware but the side supports aren't in the right position for weaving.

    @lisa_gaud Completely unaware 😂 I was told there is a video I can watch about setup and use of this loom. I’m planning to do a good bit of self-educating before I start.

    @PermaSolarPotter I have a larger version of this loom. If I find the owners manual I’ll let you know. But ask and I’ll probably be able to answer.

    @feorlen Thanks for offering. I found the manual for the stand online as a PDF and I adjusted the height of the loom accordingly. There are videos that show how to assemble the loom and thread the warp, too.

    One thing I do need help with is learning more about weft-faced weaving. I think the spacing of the warp threads lends itself to this. Do you have any good resources you could recommend?

    @PermaSolarPotter what is on the loom now resembles freeform tapestry, such as weaving in wedges and things like that. Have you ever done short rows in knitting? It’s kinda like that.

    It’s not my usual but I may have some resources. I’ll look around. Weft faced rugs use similar techniques.

    That might give you some places to start searching too.

    @feorlen I’m not planning on following her style of freeform weaving (she calls it Saori) but I will use a chunkier yarn since the warp is set up for that. I’ve looked up some videos but a book recommendation might be nice if you can think of one.

    @feorlen My weaver friend who gave me the mini rigid heddle suggested this book. It has a section on weft- and warp-faced fabrics. Looks good. I found a used copy via Abe Books.

    @PermaSolarPotter

    Oh, welcome to another rabbit hole 😆

    Ashford has good resources on their website, including videos on how to wrap the loom and start weaving.

    When I got my sample-it I started with some cotton, the type typically used for dish cloth etc. It's cheap, I could play with changing colors, using pick up sticks etc and the end result will work as a kitchen towel, even if it's full of mistakes. I'm just the kind of crafter that wants to make something useful.

    @FanCityKnits Thanks for the recommendation. As a potter, I feel the same way—it doesn’t need to be perfect as long as it’s useful. Especially in the very beginning.
