Good morning 🌞 Here’s the beginning of the band I started last night. I really like band #weaving and don’t expect to give it up even when I’ve begun using the larger loom.

Just finished threading the heddle for my next band. This time, I planned my own design—basically a riff on the chainlink pattern. #weaving

I’m itching to use yarn colors that are more my preference, but I feel like I have to use up the free yarn given to me by my weaver friend and the lady who sold me her loom. It’s all just practice at this point, so it’s fine.

I’m still waiting on my cotton harvest so I can get back to spinning, and gathering info about the larger loom I just got. #Fibers

Okay, folks—things are escalating quickly! I was going to ask for an Ashford SampleIt #Loom for my birthday but in the meantime found a used 16” Ashford loom with a stand at a huge bargain. Feels like it’s meant to be.

The previous owner left the warp threaded, which gives me an easy start. Every other hole and slot are threaded because she was using chunky art yarn, so I guess that’s what I’ll do, too. I welcome resources and advice getting started. #weaving #FiberArts #beginner

The most important thing to notice is the unity and cooperation among everything that exists. I'm about to read a book about soil next. There are books about moss, fungi, any specific topic under the sun. But the most profound thing is that each living being shows signs of intelligence and they all exist in relationship with one another. I can't help but see this as a unified Divine Intelligence. This idea is the foundation of my #spirituality. #Ecology

Question for anyone in or close to West Sonoma County (California): Do you know of anyone who might donate firewood for a friend of mine on a limited income who just lost a finger? He can’t chop wood—nor do I think I can do it safely for him. His stove uses 14-inch or smaller pieces. My car is pretty small but spacious for its size, so I can haul a fair amount in it.

There are many fascinating facts in this book that made me look at #plants differently, but for me, this was the biggest, most moving takeaway:

“Everything, at every level of life from a microbe to a rain forest, then, is an ecosystem. We are more like a system than a single unit. All biology is #ecology.”'

Zoë Schlanger, The Light Eaters: How the Unseen World of Plant Intelligence Offers a New Understanding of Life on Earth – A Popular #Science and Natural History Study of #Botany

We’re headed to Warm Mineral Springs today. I’m so excited. It’s just barely cool enough to feel good and my achy muscles need the relief. It stays at a constant 85°F and has some of the highest mineral content of any spring in the US. It’s #Florida’s only warm spring. People tout its healing potential—I hope it’s true. I just think of it as a giant epsom salt bath. Its 9 million gallons is replenished every 2 hours, it’s 230 ft deep and it’s an important archaeological site. #Nature

My eldest has just introduced me to Sprang weaving.
“ Sprang cloth has been found around the globe, dating back thousands of years. Samples have been found in North and South America, Europe, China, and Egypt.”

They are giving it a try.
It feels like something I should have heard of already.

Lichen and moss with a scattering of pine needles. Lots of different textures and colours on the forest floor.

More mini rigid heddle backstrap #weaving practice. This time I did a better job managing the warp threads and didn’t have any detangling to deal with. I really like this chain link pattern. I’ve done two bands with it so far. #Fibers #FiberArts

I love to see a problem so closely accompanied by its solution. With our sandy soils here in #Florida, nutrient leaching is always an issue. However, Mexican sunflower (tithonia diversifolia) grows easily and abundantly here, drawing P & K from the depths of the #soil into its leaves, giving us abundant, nutritious biomass that we can feed back to our soil. #permaculture #gardening @gardening

I realize that I made some errors while speaking. First and foremost, Mexican sunflower (tithonia) is a great potassium source (I mistakenly said phosphorous.) Also, I mix up plant names several times. The vining plant crawling up the trellis with the dark blue flowers is called butterfly pea. (I call it pigeon pea once or twice.) The pigeon peas are the legume shrubs that I show on the side and behind the house. My apologies. This is what happens when I gab unscripted. #gardening @gardening

@gardening Now I understand why my plants starved when I tried to grow them in kitchen scrap #compost. You lose tons of nitrogen in the composting process. It’s not that #composting is useless, it’s just not the best way to feed soil. I find this to be a relief because composting can be really labor intensive and slow. Living plants do a much better job of building SOM.

Excellent talk. This reinforces everything I’m reading in Roland Bunch’s book Restoring the Soil, and the methods I’m increasingly turning to in the garden: Less emphasis on #compost and more emphasis on #CoverCrops. Maximizing root exudates is mentioned continuously throughout the webinar. Photosynthesis does most of the heavy lifting for us. Incredible. #soil #gardening @gardening

It’s begun! I’ll be able to get a full #cotton harvest by the end of the month continuing through the fall. Then the same cycle happens again in the spring—Lots of flowers March to May and then June is harvest time. Time to get my #spinning hands warmed up. My goal is to make slightly thicker singles that are more ideal for #weaving. #fibers #FiberArts #NativePlants #WildCotton

My fiber stash is overflowing with angora fleeces from my little herd. I'll be cataloging and photographing in the next week before posting for sale here for anyone interested.

Price is $10/oz USD, free shipping within the US.
