I am not completely anti-AI. I have some very limited AI use cases that I run in my business, and I'm working on writing up a policy (without the use of AI!!!) about if/when/how I use it. BUT: I've been totally flummoxed by how many people I keep meeting who say "Oh I was opposed to it and now I use it for EVERYTHING" like..... guys what is going ON?! It's like the tech equivalent of liberal women who become conservatives once they get married and move to the suburbs.

AI has enough truly stunning use cases within science, medicine, and many professions that I cannot fully get behind a "no one should use AI ever, for any reason" because I find that attitude to be an anti-intellectual and frankly pretty uninformed stance about AI. But I also feel the same way for people who completely outsource all of their professional decisionmaking to popular LLMs! You can really see people losing critical thinking skills in real time and it's scary

@TeamMidwest I agree AI can do some good things. But good gravy, how is it that in the past 3-6 months people have completely stopped writing reference emails on their own? The requests are laughable. "Please search your name and subject files..." is my current favorite. How does AI not know we have online catalogs? And do the people copying and pasting this stuff think I'm going to sit down in my cardigan, hair in a bun, glasses down my nose, and thumb through some paper files? 🤯
