Seeing the damage that "AI" is doing to the Kernel (not just in Slop code being integrated that will bite us later but in making becoming a new kernel developer even harder than it is at a time where we should really be thinking about how to fill that pipeline) is super painful.

I think that - like Wikipedia - Linux as an alternative platform for computing was one of the new wonders of the world, something that showed that a better world is possible. And we're just pissing it away because Linus doesn't want to talk to people who he needs to mentor.

@tante maybe the BDFL model was not great all along, who'd have thunk

It should've been BDFN - Benevolent Dictator For Now.

With the explicit aim to switch to a different governance model once the project becomes big enough that the overhead of a more democratic process is managable.

To be fair most vibe coders you can't even mentor. But just giving up entirely also can't be the answer...

I've been reading some interviews with bro and

Linus is the one that needs a mentor.

Dude has to sit down and be educated about little things like "art", "culture", and "history". He may have done one thing right in his life, but he's a fool.

I can't help but feel like he's a perfect example of the frankensteins the tech world created when it accepted that antisocial behavior was just the cost of making software.

It's time to send people like Linus back to their moms.

@johnzajac @tante In my experience, that's exactly it. The influence of a mother has been villanised in the western world as weakness for way too long, while idolizing being a selfish ass as strength...

People need kindness, pets if possible, in their early life. To grow into a whole person.

@johnzajac @tante Got that entirely right. Tech heads and business people need ethics and philosophy training in high school and college, or they don’t graduate. Otherwise you get amoral behavior and worse.

cannot emphasize enough that the last thing human life on planet earth needs is linus mentoring anyone on any topic

@tante Us BSD greybeards shaking our heads is whipping up a stiff breeze. But then again, that breeze has been stiff for some odd 30 or 40 years or so already. Strange that only now people notice that Linus is a shallow, immature person.

@tante The LLM is a finishing move, but reading that discussion leads me to believe that all of those people stopped believing in any of the supposed ideals of open source software a long time ago, and I suspect some of them never believed in them.

@tante Like, from the Linux kernel team chatting about how to bar new developers, to the discussions of passkeys being important because users can't be trusted to manage their passwords, I feel like there's a convergence on centralized authority.

And I'm shitty at being an anarchist, but literally every social problem we have is from centralizing authority and concentrating power.

@tante can I ask you a (maybe silly) question not related to the issue of Linus and the Kernel? Why is everyone talking about "AI slops", where the "slop" com from? Sorry I'm not an English speaker and I'd like to better understand the term. Thank you!

@tante I have wanted to write about this the first time it happened but couldn’t be bothered… Anyways this should be a good lesson to the FOSS community that putting all your eggs in one basket never ends up well, yeah having a free fully functioning OS is cool but Linux as a project and Linus as a person have showed cracks for quite some time now.. this is just a continuation of it.

@tante I suspect part of it is that he doesn't want to cede control over the direction of Linux, and consolidating decision-making authority in a group of long-time confidants is a solid strategy for making sure fresh blood doesn't alter the overall trajectory. In the context of FOSS, that's what AI is for: consolidating control by making collaboration (seem) less necessary.

    @tante

this has to be absurd, cause if 60% or so of kernel devs felt like you, why wouldn't you just fork ?

    what am I missing ?
