Does anyone remember (and have a link to) that polyglot zig program that was a static that found ld.so and re-executed itself as a dynamic executable in order to load GPU drivers which need libc?

well ok, maybe 2nd most, with the top one being Asimov's "Profession"

I just found this interview with @andrewrk from 4 months ago, and like

it's the most hope-restoring thing I've seen or heard this year

oh god, why did I look at how tty0 is implemented

this is so cursed...

hmm ok so looks like it all revolves around vt.c:

https://elixir.bootlin.com/linux/v7.2.9/source/drivers/tty/vt/vt.c

it has:
- a list of register console drivers (struct con_driver / struct consw) - corresponding to vtcon devices in /sys/class/vtconsole
- a list of virtual consoles, each with an index of a driver that handles it, and each with a buffer of characters and attributes (struct vc_data https://elixir.bootlin.com/linux/v7.2.9/source/include/linux/console_struct.h#L120)

it provides, in parallel:
- a vcs{,a,u} driver
- a tty driver for tty1-ttyN
- a console driver

Is there some place that documents the Linux virtual console and things around it? Like, a high level overview of everything between a PCI device or EFI call and a /dev/ttyN?

we must've taken a wrong turn somewhere...

Remember when most scrapers respected robots.txt, and even ones that didn't tried hard to keep their request rate low enough so as not to be noticable to the website's admins?

Are there situations (outside of Competitve Programming) where:

there is a feature of a programming language that you don't like

but because everyone else can use it, not using it will put you at a disadvantage

so you have to use it, even though you hate it

?

Do I know any quantum physicists?

Cause it looks like in the "double-slit experiment", the part about "interference pattern disappears when you observe which way the electron went" was never confirmed experimentally, and I'm starting to suspect it's a misunderstanding.

EDIT: and by "disappears" I mean "turns from a double-slit pattern into a single-slit pattern"

You can keep morality personal. But ethics is, by definition, a subset of moral norms that a group of professionals have agreed to follow in their work. It can't be kept personal.

Fortunately, programming is not a profession, there is no liability express or implied, no standards to hold ourselves up to...

oh, wait

It's pathetic that if I want to interactively try out some OS APIs (be it POSIX, BSD socket, or Linux-specific), the easiest way to do so is not through the Unix shell, it's through Python

I wish I had had an opportunity to write a tracing JIT, either as a university assignment or as an internship

what should an stdlib include?
- data structures (list, hashmap, bst tree, set, queue)
- event loop (or at least an abstract interface for one)
- locks, atomics
- logging API
- common error types
- regex
- cross-platform filesystem API
- abstract IO stream API
- json parser
- compression algorithms (deflate, bzip, lzma, zstd)
- implementation of tar and zip file formats
- sha256
- popular cryptographic primitives (AES, chacha20, RSA, ECDSA)
- network sockets
- DNS resolver
- https client

Apparently it's the last opportunity to send emails to MEPs in hopes to stop ChatControl 2.0

I don't get how that works, but apparently, despite being rejected by the European Parliament, someone is trying to push it through tomorrow's (29 June) trilogue.

I sent mine, hope it helps.

the anxiety of changing things without committing them to git...

Remember that "what if <CLI tool> had a GUI" mockup that basically mapped some tool's CLI flags to Win9x-style checkboxes, radio groups, text/number input fields, etc, to make fun of its complexity?

Does anyone still have a link to that, or remember what commandline tool it was for?

oh come on, it works now? I haven't even gotten to work...

I'm finally seeing one of those mythical GitHub outages that people have been talking about for the last few months

what's the purpose of including the function name in a runtime error message?

Naively, I'd think that it's to find the place in the code that printed the error message.

But I can usually do that just by grepping the error message in the repo... do people have so generic error messages that the same string can appear in more than one place in the code?
